View Full Version : Easter Egg in Cars inaccessible after RipIt4Me

After using RipIt4Me, I found that I could not get to the Easter Egg in Cars (Dinoco 400 on the Menu). The selection was present, but choosing the selection started the movie. The RipIt4Me setting was selected so that the DVD menu would come up initially and I retained the "tiny and useless" cells. The rip from DVDFab was able to retain the Easter Egg. What setting in RipIt4Me do I need to retain the Easter Egg? Is this the same for all DVD Easter Eggs? Thanks.

Without studying the IFOs we can't say for sure. Only that if the egg was accessed by a BOV, it might have been overlooked. To stop this from happening, increase the BOV duration in the preferences (I have it set to 300).
Note: Please do not post your IFOs or buttoninfo.txt here.

I've been looking for hours now... I too have been having problems with cars, however, I can't get DVD Decrypter, DVDFab, or even the newer ImgBurn, to get past about the 2.3gbs point, somewhere in 10_2 ... could you tell me what you've done to get to the point you are at? I can't even get it on my HDD and this happens a lot.

Did the RipIt4Me rip finish?
If so, load the DVD up in PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html) and go into every menu (they have #b next door to them) using Ctrl-M. The Easter Eggs will be apparent and if you click Edit, you can figure out the key sequence to get there.

You haven't stated whether you're able to access the "Easter Egg" when playing the original, commercial DVD.
Also, what Region is your DVD?

I encountered the exact same problem as previously mentioned with using RipIt4Me to rip the Cars Region 1 DVD. With default settings on all programs, the rip completed successfully. It appeared to be perfectly fine, except for the easter egg that appears on the main menu after the menu cycles several times. While playing the original DVD in MPC, I got the easter egg to show correctly when I activated the Dinoco 400 logo button. After I ran RipIt4Me with the default settings, I opened the resulting VIDEO_TS folder in MPC. When I clicked on the Dinoco 400 logo button on the ripped copy, it started the main feature instead of the easter egg.
After a bit of experimenting, I seemed to have gotten a decent rip that includes the correct easter egg functionality by using the following settings in RipIt4Me:
Default settings, with the following options unchecked
In "advanced settings":
- Remove useless menu cells
- Remove last VTS(s) if needed
- Blank bogus VTS if needed
In "FixVTS settings":
- Remove unreferenced video
BOV: Scan cells less than 300
I also unchecked "Run DVDShrink", as I was planning on using DVD Rebuilder instead. I'm not sure if all those options needed to be unchecked, but it seems to have worked for me.
I had tried only setting the BOV option to 300, but it didn't work to fix the problem.

Looks like I may have spoken too soon, as the rip I completed last night could not be opened in DVD Rebuilder. It gave a message about not being able to find VTS_01, despite the folder playing correctly in MPC.
The good news is that I tried DVDFab Decrypter 2.9.7.9 on the same disc, and it successfully ripped all the features, including the working easter egg.

For whatever reason, the "RipIt4Me" package of programs ERRONEOUSLY deletes VTS_22/Title 59 (That's where the "Easter Egg" cartoon is located - and is addressable from the Main Menu after 5 or 6 cycles) and all references to it.
One simple way to obtain the proper results, including the "Easter Egg" is as follows:
1) Rip using DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in "File" mode (select "ALL" files, NOT "movie" files) and
2) Load the rip into VOBBlanker, set a new output directory/folder, select "Process all" and then press the "Process" radiobutton
3) Use your favorite compression program to compress to DVD5 size
**EDIT** Everything I've discussed in this thread is based on the Region 1, Widescreen version of the "Cars" DVD

I have analysed this DVD and RipIt4Me is correct in eliminating VTS 22.
The video is VTS 22 is completely unreferenced and unvisited. The only way to get to VTS 22 is thru a Jump to title 59 (pre command 35 in VMGM 6). This can only be true if gprm(9)=15 and it never is.
The same is true of title 15 in VTS 8.
Perhaps there is some other Easter Egg that is being referred to.

Perhaps there is some other Easter Egg that is being referred to.Nope. If you have the DVD available to you, rip it using ONLY DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 - and then simply play VTS_22. Then for comparative purposes, play the DVD and, after allowing the main menu to cycle several times, select the Dinoco logo when it appears...

As you probably already know, my level of operation does not include the minutiae of operations within .IFO files, rather it is very much at the user level - and that's precisely why I said,If you have the DVD available to you, rip it using ONLY DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 - and then simply play VTS_22. Then for comparative purposes, play the DVD and, after allowing the main menu to cycle several times, select the Dinoco logo when it appears...Have you done this?
BTW - As I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, everything I refer to is regarding the Region 1 Widescreen version of this DVD...
**EDIT** If you do have the DVD, a simple experiment will show you what happens. First, access the "Easter Egg" from the main menu of a properly ripped DVD residing on your hard drive(To satisfy yourself that, at least initially, it's working).
Then, change the name of "VTS_22_1.VOB" to "VTS_22_1.VOX". Play the hard drive version of the DVD anew and try to access the "Easter Egg" again...

@blu
I can confirm that the R4 version does link to VTS 22, but it's done in such a way that PGCEdit doesn't display the button, hence the button command either, and thus it doesn't show in a normal trace or calling command search.
If you preview VTSM 10 LU1, PGC 18 you will see that the Dinoco icon pops up in the lower right portion of the video towards the end of Cell 3 (and disappears again before the end of the cell).
When playing the DVD, it seems to play thru cells 1, 2 & 3 and then repeats cell 3 continually. So the first time the menu appears you need to watch the intro piece (cell 1), 4 iterations of the cars around the track (cell 2), then another 4 iterations of the cars around the track (cell 3), to see the Dinoco button. After this it's only cell 3 repeating so it's 4 "laps" between each button appearance.
If you go into the button editor, select cell 3, then advance the image towards the end of the cell, you will eventually see the Dinoco image come up, but without a button overlay.
Not sure if my thinking is right or not, but I guess it's either a case of "a second set of buttons" which I belive PGCEdit doesn't support, or a "BOV in the menu domain" which I don't know if it is even possible let alone whether PGCEdit checks for them.
Hope this makes some sense.

@zacoz
I do believe you've got it! PgcEdit does not support a second set of buttons and you guys are right on. Seems RipIt4Me doesn't support it either - good bug catch. Hope the author is reading this.
And I see the second set directly sets gprm(9) to 15, which would result in VTS 8 and 22 being retained.

And I see the second set directly sets gprm(9) to 15, which would result in VTS 8 and 22 being retained.
How did you actually see it set gprm(9)? Is there another way to see it in PGCEdit or are you using another app?

@blutach
Hi!
I find it rather curious/disappointing that you would deny an irrefutable statement of fact, based on my actual observation of DVD behavior (and stated in three different ways by me in this thread) and make the absolute statement thatI have analysed this DVD and RipIt4Me is correct in eliminating VTS 22., apparently placing total reliance on analysis of .IFOs - and then only acknowledge the correctness of my observations when they were restated by someone else in the context of .IFO analysis and possible shortcomings of PGCEdit.
We've all seen that the creators of commercial DVD structures are able to repeatedly come up with new concepts (mostly directed to attempts to make DVDs uncopyable), so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that an analytical tool (such as PGCEdit, or similar) might not properly deal with the "latest and greatest" .IFO structure.
As I've said in many posts here and at other forums, many times simple (factual observation) is better (than technical interpretation/analysis).
And just so the fix for this problem doesn't get lost amongst this peripheral discussion, I'll repeat it here:
One simple way to obtain the proper results, including the "Easter Egg" is as follows:
1) Rip using DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in "File" mode (select "ALL" files, NOT "movie" files) and
2) Load the rip into VOBBlanker, set a new output directory/folder, select "Process all" and then press the "Process" radiobutton

@zacoz - you hit it right on the money. First, DVD Remake Pro (http://www.dimadsoft.com/dvdremakepro/index.php) can see the 2nd set of buttons (which is a limitation of PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html) presently). This is not unusual and happens all the time with Easter Eggs. My mistake in the info in post 9.
I'm sure the RipIt4Me author can find a way to overcome this limitation (he/she always does :)) so egg hunters can be happy (perhaps in the interim unticking Remove last VTS if needed and Blank bogus VTSs in the preferencs for this DVD will do the trick).

Sorry. I haven't visited this thread in a while. I was able to access the Easter Egg with the original commercial DVD (kind of boring Easter Egg, actually). The disc is a Region 1 disc. It looks like I wasn't the only one who came across this problem. It picks up with my rip using DVDFab Express. Maybe with the new release, it will work.

Thanks for being the person who first pointed out the flaw in the "RipIt4me" processing of this DVD!
As I posted earlier in this thread, one simple way to obtain the proper results (and avoid the erroneous processing by the "RipIt4Me" package), including the "Easter Egg" is as follows:
1) Rip using DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in "File" mode (select "ALL" files, NOT "movie" files) and
2) Load the rip into VOBBlanker, set a new output directory/folder, select "Process all" and then press the "Process" radiobutton

* Made RipIt4Me better handle multiple sets of buttons in a menu. This solves the Easter Egg problem in Cars.
* Fixed a problem with DVDs that have a very large number of buttons. The cleanup no longer fails, but might take a bit longer.
* Improved the analysis to handle DVDs that have large numbers of menus (Ice Age 2 for example).
* The "Next" button in Step 1 no longer can be pressed if a valid DVD isn't present in the selected drive.
* RipIt4Me now checks for CeEKey.exe on startup, and offers to kill the process. CeEKey.exe has been found to potentially create problems when the PSL file is imported.
* Fixed a problem in Step 1 that could prevent RipIt4Me from creating the target rip directory in ISO mode, if automatic naming was selected with the VIDEO_TS folder option.
* Incorporated better code to detect the state of the drive in Step 1.

I tried this twice, couldn't get it to work either time,1.5.7 and 1.6.0. I got a really strange error I've never seen b4 both times can't word it exactly but it was to the effect that the "file was locked" and it was "unable to access it". with an abort, retry and ignore buttons (I got the same thing on superman returns during the backup and I hit ignore and it continued) anyway but then I got the file too big to fit a dvd 5, I have the logs I have to zip them and get them up. Has anyone seen this one before?

Okay. I finally got around to trying RipIt4Me 1.6.3 on Cars again. It rips just fine and the Easter Egg works. However, when I try to burn using Roxio 7 OEM, it crashes Roxio. I backed up The Incredibles using RipIt4Me 1.6.3 and also compressed using DVD-RB with HC Encoder just two nights ago and it was able to burn just fine with Roxio. I'm a bit puzzled why one DVD should work while the other does not. The error message is with Roxio and involves dvdvr.dll. I can run the ISO without a problem on a virtual drive; I just can't burn it to a disc. Any thoughts?
I think I'll try IMG Burn and see if it can burn with that program.
blutach
5th January 2007, 04:17
Does it open and shrink OK? Crashing a dll sounds like a software conflict.

5th January 2007, 05:57
Doesn't it seem odd that a specific file (as opposed to another software) would cause a software conflict though? Why would The Incredibles ISO burn without conflict, but not the Cars ISO? What's also odd is that the previous attempts to rip Cars did not produce this conflict.
In the end, I installed IMGBurn and found that the file burns okay with this program. I wish I could figure this one out. It makes me wonder if there are going to be more problems in the future and if the means of ripping (RipIt4Me) or compression (DVD-RB) on this newer movie had anything to do with it.

Hard to tell the future as crystal balls are foggy right now :)

RipIt4Me(1.7.1.0) removes the Easter Egg when "Cars" in Japan, too.
It is in VTS_18, not VTS_22 in Japan and jumped from button of main menu.
I suppose the reason is the structure of cell's button.
The cell has 3 sets of buttons, and 3 set each has 7 buttons.
No.7 button in only 2nd set has the command which jumps to Easter Egg. But No.7 button in 1st and 3rd sets have different command.
I tryed the method not to remove Easter Egg.
I confirmed it is possible to keep Easter Egg by deleting No.7 buttons in 1st sets.
RipIt4Me seems to recognize the command of first set of each No. button (If 1st set doesn't have, recognize of 2nd set).
So when all sets have same number of buttons, it recognize the command in only 1st set even if there is different command in after sets.
When No.7 button is not in 1st set, the command in 2nd set is recognized.
Additioanl information;
DVDFAbHDDDecrypter(4.0.2.0beta) removes this Easter Egg, too.
But the reason seems to be different from RipIt4Me.
Because it is impossible to keep Easter Egg by deleting No.7 buttons in 1st sets.
It is possible by editting the command in 1st as to be same as in 2nd.
DVDFAbHDDDecrypter seems to recognize the command in only absoletely 1st set.(If 1st set doesn't have but 2nd has, can't recognize in 2nd set).

Does this occur in other copy protection removal programs?
DVDDecrypter and AnyDVDRipper6.3.0.1beta(with AI Scanner) don't remove this playable cell.
The method that I confirmed is ;
1)ripping by DVDDecrypter with File Mode.
(It doesn't remove this playable cell, but RipIt4Me and DVDFabHDDDecrypter remove.)
2)editting or deleting button by DvdReMakePro.
3)create ISO by ImgBurn.
4)Mount by Daemon Tools
5)ripping test (RipIt4Me, DVDFabHDDDecrypter)
6)confirm whether this cell is removed or not.
By the way, there are 2 types of "Cars" in Japan. One has RipGuard and another doesn't.
What I own and tested is the type which doesn't have RipGuard.
