Hi guys.

I Started to use magic DVD copier about a year ago to back up movies I don't want my kids destroying. Went to DVD shrink recently (about 3 months ago) and Started using Ripit4me 2 weeks ago when I could not back up A Buena Vista title.

Well so far all seemed well but yesterday I did a rip of curious George and X-men 3 then used DVD Shrink to burn them on to a DVD9 (Full Disk BackUp). All looks well at first but if I try to Fast Forward Or rewind I get an error message "disc error major" and it stops. If I press play it starts over from the beginning not resuming as it usualy does when stopped.

This is happenning with these 2 only. I tested 2 other DVDs backed up recently using ripit4me and DVD shrink and the problem does not occur.

It also stopped somewhere in the middle and I suspect it is during the layer switch.

I can chapter skip no problem but not FF.

Any ideas?

PS I tried playing the HDD file on my PC using Power DVD and I can FF there no problem. Could it have been a problem during the burning process?

Welcome to doom 9 Rolando.

then used DVD Shrink to burn them on to a DVD9 (Full Disk BackUp
Do not burn to DVD 9 from DVD Shrink. What are you shrinking? DVD Shrink can not set the layer break correctly.

How to do it?

1. Rip in ISO mode with RipIt4Me
2. Burn the ISO with ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com)

Make sure you only use Verbatim +R DL blanks.

Thread transferred to DVD Burning.

thanks for the reply.

If I already have the files to hard disc, is there another way to burn it to DVD 9 with out re-inserting the original DVD. No big deal if I don't have a choice but I just ripped all the kids' movies I want to back up to HDD and don't want to start over from scratch.

Also that expalins the layer switch but what about the FF? I have done this before and I could FF no problem.

Any other suggestions?

FF can be disabled by PUOs (prohibited user operations) or when some pointers are missing in the VOB files.

You can clear the PUOs with PgcEdit (use DVD -> Filter prohibites user operations, and the PUO plugin if you need to remove the PUOs from the VOB files)

Use VobBlanker to rebuild the pointers. (Tick the options Fix always VOB SYNCI/SRI pointers in Titles and Menus, and precess the whole DVD.)
VobBlanker can also remove the VOB PUOs (but as it will copy the VOB files, it takes longer than the PgcEdit plugin, which patches them in place.)

thanks for the info r0lZ.

I will download PgcEdit and VobBlanker as soon as I get home. Basicaly I just run these on the X-Men 3 folder and re-burn it right?

What caused it though? Ripit4me? Is there a step I should skip when ripping with ripit4me to avoid this?

This is a lot harder than I thought. All I want is to make a backup of the movies my kids like to watch so I don't have to worry that Cars, Superman or Curious George original will get scratched. Actually I am more worried about those Disney that I can't even replace if they mess them up. First back ups are Snow White and Sleeping Beauty...

so blutach you suggest I use ImgBurn to burn to a DVD9 even if they are already HDD files?

thanks guys!

What caused it though? Ripit4me?I don't know. RipIt4Me is most certainly not responsible of the problem.
Usually, the PUOs are removed by DVD Decrypter automatically, but as it's an option, you might have disabled it.
Are you sure FF works on your original DVD?

Yep, use ImgBurns build mode. :)

Disk error major" is the sign of a sector that can't be read - ie a bad burn.

Something odd...

I remembered that I had first made a "movie only" DVD 5 of CUrious George before my daughter said she wanted the games too. So I pulled out that disc and lo and behold it fast forwards no problem. Isn't weird? Both discs were made from the same rip, same files on HDD opened with DVD Shrink.

sorry dude, I need not mean to sound repetitive myself.

Thanks so much for the help guys.

got ImgBurn, did a backup from disc to ISO and from ISO to DL disc with ImgBurn. no prob.

Now for those files already on the HDD I am trying to use ImgBurn as recommended. I went to mode and chose build. Now what?

I went to to the ImgBurn site, read on the guides I was refered to in the forums but unfortunately am still lost.

Sorry guys, I know dealing with Newbs can be frustrating but I am hoping for a simple one click solution.

obviously can do a multi step process if someis willing to walk me through it.

I got X-Men 3 on hard drive and HDD folders created with Ripit4me and DVD decypter.

I want to back up the full disc on DL media.

Can someone walk me through this like I am 4 years old please?

Hi!I went to mode and chose build. Now what?1) Select the icon (Third from the top) that represents "Browse for a folder" - and select the folder that contains the DVD file "package" (.IFOs, .BUPs, .VOBs).

2) If you're creating an .ISO image file to be saved to your hard drive (You've selected "Image file" from the "Output" dropdown menu), select your destination.

If you're burning directly (not saving to your hard drive - you've selected "Device" from the "Output" dropdown menu), your burner will already be selected.

3) Click on the "Write" icon...

You have no idea how I appreciate this. I will follow your guide soon as I get home tonight.

My problem was that when I was trying to choose something in the "output" drop down menu nothing was available. I could not choose any device since the menu was blank. Even if I chose the browse Icon it seemed to be trying to open something not pick a target.

I guess I'll check again when I get home

thanks again!

I love your attitude setarip_old.

You sound old school (not old) from the days when people used forums to help each other not to brag or make newcommers feel stupid for not knowing the answer to their own question.

Put me in a Home Theater or movie Forum and I will gladly hold anyone's hand but this back up stuff has me as lost as Hansel and Gretel.

I will give you an update when I get home from work in about 2 hours.

I had another question though:

I noticed in the decrypter settings that there was a check next to something like remove layer break info or something like that.

If I un-check this will it help in the future? Or will that mess up when I backup to DVD-5?

As complex as this seems I am so happy this exists and you guys are around to help. Been collecting since 97. Small collection compared to the real collectors but over the years I have been living in fear of the kids accidentaly ruining one or two.

I have only 300 DVDs (give or take) and about 50 of those my kids love to watch. When it comes to the Disneys it is a bigger fear because some are back in the vault! So if Jr scratches Snow White or Beauty and the Beast, daddy will cry for a long time.

So in short thanks again, to all of you.

If I un-check this will it help in the future?Nope - IMGBurn will calculate the best options for the layerbreak, whether you've removed it or not when ripping with DVD Decrypter.Or will that mess up when I backup to DVD-5?Yup - At the least, it'll create a noticeable visual (and audio) delay. You sound old school (not old)As my grandkids would be all too happy to tell you, I'm both ;>} Thanks for the kind remark!

well I am chiming in late but duties have made it that I am only trying that X-Men back-up now.

I got propted a few things that scared me but I think I did ok.

One I think was it asking me where to put the layer break.

wasn't sure so picked one and am hoping for the best.

How can I make sure I did not pick a spot right in the middle of dialog?

Also there were options like "seemless", sounded good but did not check it as did not know what it would do.

it's doing it now... got my fingers crossed!

well I tested it and no problems so far. Can FF with no problem. One small problem though, looks like those peskey User operation prohibited or whatever things did not get removed.

I guess I have to set that in DVD decrypter.

Is it the remove IFO PUOs and remove VOB PUOs in settings File mode or is that something else?

thanks!

setarip_old

Is it the remove IFO PUOs and remove VOB PUOs in settings File mode?Yes, but I wouldn't select "Remove VOB PUOs", if I were you., as doing so may create a false "angle" notification onscreen ( a camera icon with numbers underneath) for a major part of the viewing time...

Glad to hear everything else worked for you ;>}
