What would be the optimum bitrate to use for x264 if I want to do an anamorphic encode preserving full resolution of a Full Screen DVD?

I would like to stick to standard sizes of 2CD or 3CD

720 x 576
138 minutes
AC3 @ 448kbps
25 fps

If I do a 2CD the bitrate would be around 900 kbps, will that be enough at that resolution?

Looking at the movie length (2hrs18mins) and the resolution, I'd say that 900kbps is hmm ... only good enough, not excellent.

However, it depends on the s o u r c e !. If it's action-packed content (or full of camera pans and the like, like in amateur video) or a very grainy film: it won't be enough at all. If it's composed mainly of still scenes or you are lucky enough the source is clean, it'll be well enough :)

Your best bet is simply to have a try ;)

If you observe that the visual quality is like "hmmm almost there", consider using a CQM (sharktooth and *.mp4 guy provide well tuned ones in other threads I'm too lazy to point you to ;))

Just curious. If in MeGui I select an average bitrate of say 2,500, is that actually the average video bitrate or do I have to subtract the AC3 audio from that?

Its just the video, provided you have told it your audio specs. You can see, if you set 'File Size' and then up the audio bitrate your video bitrate drops. If you set 'Average bitrate' and up the audio your overall filesize increases.

The movie is original DVD9 of Come and See

If I use a Constant Quality Matrix is there a way to achieve standard CD sizes?

Are you referring to those Sharktooth matrices that are downloaded through megui update tool?

If I use a Constant Quality Matrix is there a way to achieve standard CD sizes? imho ? definitely not, unless you downsize your video to something more "common" (ex: 640*352).

Are you referring to those Sharktooth matrices that are downloaded through megui update tool? Those but also here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=117041).

Hmmmm 2nd thoughts, having a clean 2CD rip is indeed possible with a correctly chosen CQM in your case, you'll have to choose a tradeoff between detail and blocking though.
