View Full Version : Polish Subtitles not displaying correctly on standalone DivX player

Hi,
I recently bought a DivX compatible player. Before that I always added the subtitles for DVDs using Subtitle Creator and it worked without any problems at all.
Now when I burned a DivX with .sub subtitles they are being displayed, expect the special Polish characters.
Does anybody know why, or what I can do about this?
Thanks a lot,
Kuba.

Sounds like it's simply a limitation of your player. If necessary, you can always burn your video with PERMANENT Polish subtitles...

The problem is in the firmware of your player. You'll need the 1250 language code page inside the firmware player. Try to make some search on internet, on forums (including polish forum) and maybe you'll have the luck to find the modded firmware for your player which support 1250.
Adivce: never use .txt extension for subtitles. I know in Poland, the MicroDVD (.sub) subtitles are with extension .txt, which is wrong and your player can't handle this extension.
The best is to use .srt (SubRip) subtitles. Use Subtitle Workshop for this conversion in .srt.
enjoy,
Mtz

Have a look at this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=897868#post897868) where I put some links to Pioneer firmware sites.

Yeah, I have thought of it and I think this is centrainly a solution, however we again loose time and quality because of the re-encoding...
I'll setup VirtualDub to add subtitles to my movie tonight and see what happens, I've never done this before and I also didn't have as much choise when it comes to fonts/place of subs etc. which I have normally when using Subtile Creator.

That's very helpfull, I'll try to search for modded firmware, I'll let you know when I find something.
About the format, I think it doesn't matter as MicroDVD and SRT are both TEXT, while we would need PICTURES (like .sup) to make it display correctly without modding the firmware.
My player can display all of those: .txt (MicroDVD) .sub, .srt and .smi
I don't know anything about the SMI format though. Subtitle Workshop can't save to that format...

Thank you everyone for your support,

Hi everyone, a little update:
I have gone to the Polish LG website and sucesfully updated my firmware to the newest version from the Polish website.
This didn't help at all. :( The problem still exists just like it did before.
I tried to look for modded firmware but I couldn't find anything.
I don't have a very popular player: LG RH7500
If someone still has any ideas please tell me,
Kuba.

Did you try to mux your movie into .divx container with .srt subtitles? It can be done without re-encoding... It's working for me on my LG player.

I'm rather sure that won't help at all as the subtitles stay like they are, and it's up to the player on how to display them.
When it comes to adding the subtitles permenatly to a avi file, do you still have to use Doubble Pass Encoding and all the quality featrues just for adding the subtitles?

No, you need tools called DivxMuxGUI and Divxmux.exe from divx media create package. Just mux your existing .avi and .srt subtitles into .divx container. Don't forget to save your subtitles in UTF-8 encoding for polish fonts. You should find everything needed here (http://labs.divx.com/archives/000066.html).

However I have some problems using DivXMux.exe
The web tool doesn't work for me at all (I can't select anything from the list) so I tried to make a script myself using the manual.
This is what I got:
DivXMux.exe divmux -v vid1.avi -a vid1.avi -s vid1.srt -o vid1PL.divx
This unfourtunetly gives me: ERROR: DIVXMUX_INVALIDFORMAT File: vid1.avi
Do you possibly know what I did wrong?
Thanks a lot,
Kuba.

are you trying to mux 'xvid'? change fourcc to 'divx'. I can send you divxmuxgui if you want to.
[edit]
I've just tried it with 'xvid' and it works fine. Drop me a pm and I will send you the tools which are working for me.
