View Full Version : Replacing audio, leaving video untouched

Hi,
Any idea on a decent freeware tool that can replace the entire audio-track for an already compressed movie-file?
I just like to leave the video alone, so import it and do a lossless re-encode with new audio added 'under' it. Possibly time-shifted if needed, and preferably previewable with the new audio under it, etc. but that's not really necessary.
My main need is to not have to re-encode the video-content of it.
I've tried several editing software packages, but none of them seemed to have an option to just leave the V as is and change the A without doing anything with the V.
Any tips on good free software that helps me with this are welcomed.
Thanks,
J

Virtual Dub or Vdub mod may work. You can use 'direct stream copy' for the video.

Hi!
It would be beneficial if you stated the format of the video...

It's MPEG-2 (I think from DVD) and VirtualdubMod 1.5.10.2 says it can't deal with the source for Direct stream copy AVI.
But seeing that the quality of the filters is very good in VdM I decided to re-encode (and resize) the video after all. It has this weird 480x576 resolution anyway, which I want to get rid of. Plus a level filter significantly improves quality in this case (it was totally out of contrast).
Any hints on settings for VdM to keep the video-source quality as much the same as original as possible?
I'm currently trying out several ways to create a reasonably small result from it, with new audio. I'm encoding to AVC/H264.
Awsome tool, by the way. Thanks for pointing me to it.

You can use Elecard XMuxer Pro but it is not freware.

The best thing to do would be to open the video and the audio you want to mux with it in whichever editing app you use, such as Vegas, then edit the audio the way you want it and to get the perfect sync. Then axport the audio to the mpeg acceptable format, like mp2 or whichever it is (in Vegas you may have to render the entire project as mpeg elementary streams to get the audio). Then demux the original mpeg with for instance TMPG, and then remux it with the new audio.
EDIT: whooops, i missed the 'freeware part'. Anyways, the process is the same, except instead of vegas you could open the original file in something like Zveistein or other freeware program. Maybe even audacity supports importing video files.

Hi,
My way to do it will be:
-Separate (demux) video and audio with reJig in file mode.
-If audio is ac3, convert to wav whit HeadAC3he
-Edit audio with Audacity. Export to to wav or mp3
-If desired format is ac3 again, convert wav with Aften gui
-Remux video and audio with ImagoMPEG-muxer for mpeg files or with Muxman for VOB files
Good Luck

well, we have pretty much the same ideas, i only mentioned zweistein and the likes in case the desired audio needs some cutting & editing, so it's easier to do it in the original file and then export only audio for muxing.
