How's DVD Shrink for Backing Up to a Double Layer Disk?

Does it work good without any compression?

Does it work good with compression?

Are there any special steps required for getting a good backup to a double layer different from going to a single layer?

Don't use DVD Shrink for DL disks (what's there to shrink?)

1. Decrypt either to ISO or files
2. Burn with ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com) (if you have files, use build mode)

Ah so.... makes sense.

Is there any quality and/or speed advantage one way or the other between ISO and File mode?

No. Unless of course the fact that you can burn the ISO right away with ImgBurn.

I might add to Chetwood's remark by saying that ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com) can burn VIDEO_TS files right away, as well as ISOs.

personally the best method for doing a perfect copy is to use anydvd coupled with clonecd this way the disc will be identicle but without the css encryption.

@chilledoutuk

A lot of us would rather not have an identical backup. We prefer to remove the warning screens, extra studio screens, and in some cases the multitudes of trailers added to the disc.

I agree, it's quite a pleasure to put in the DVD and get to the movie without all the BS up front. :D

I would use RipIt4Me to make a uncompressed Movie Only rip and then use Imgburn 2 to burn it to a DL and set a appropriate layer change.

If nothing is being taken out. The simplest way is to make a ISO with DVD Decryptor and then burn with Imgburn. RipIt4Me would be required to make DVD DEcryptor make a DL ISO of a Arcoss DVD. It will be 1:1.

it would be useful for shrink to allow DL burning... 1-to-1 copies aren't always possible on Parallel-Track-Path discs.

DVD+R DL can only be burnt as Outer-Track-Path, the difference being with PTP the laser servo goes right back to the physical start of the disc and the pause is longer, but can sometimes fit a little more data.

this means that some discs will only be backupable if DVD shrink can shuffle the movie around enough to get layer 1 smaller than layer 0 around the original layer break. this probably means hitting the 2nd half of the feature only, and by a very small percentage. the upshot of doing this is a much shorter layer break pause...

there's not many discs out there like this though... it used to be common practice to make a PTP disc if there was no good place for a layer break that split it such that layer 1 was smaller than layer 0. it's not so commonplace anymore because DVDafterEdit can't master PTP discs at all...

Well, certainly DVD Shrink can't shuffle the movie around at all. And is there any PTP writeable disks out there?

Easiest way if there are problems with a commercial disk (and there shouldn't be) is to split a cell using VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm) or DVD Remake Pro (http://www.dimadsoft.com/dvdremakepro/index.php).

@Mug Funkyit would be useful for shrink to allow DL burning...It already does - but as others here will tell you, it doesn't set layer breaks properly...
