I've written a small guide on how to convert DVD video to DV. It's located at http://itsjustonesandzeros.blogspot.com/2006/11/converting-dvd-content-to-dv.html.
It's quite a newbie quide, but I've been asked about it a few times. I don't know how to write or publish a Doom9 guide (and I'm not sure it's appropriate for Doom9), but in any case, if you want to convert DVD to DV, you can look at my guide.
I assume one would want to convert DVD to DV to include a short clip from a movie in his own home made movies. It's definitely not a recommended format for archiving ;-)
