View Full Version : Do I need to enable H264 in FFDshow?

I read in another thread that I should have it unchecked for Codecs in FFDshow. However I noticed when viewing some movies (mkv-264) that when it's unchecked I can see...blockiness. If I check it, everything is nice and smooth. So which is the right way?

I usually encode every movie using HQ Slower at an average bit rate of 2500.

You should uncheck it only if you want to use another decoder such as CoreAVC.

Okay thanks! I'll stick with ffdshow...which is free.

...if your machine is fast enough, why not? :)

Because it supports multi core/cpu, a BBC-HD 1080MBAFF H.264 20mbit sample almost runs on one Intel D930 core with latest ffmpeg, and thats without multi core/cpu support :)

fyi, one of my pcs hooked to a standard def TV is an old P3 900. It could not play 264 without skipping, either with AC3 or AAC audio. Now, with coreavc 1.1 it will play 704 width mp4's with aac just fine. CPU hits about 85-90% on complex scenes.
