hi all
suppose I cant change the region of the dvd rom and its stuck on region 2, can I still rip from it region 1 dvd's? (not play them, just rip it)? someone in this forum told me once I can do that...
if it is possible, with what software?
TIA

No chance.
Its not important what you gonna do whit the DVD. You only have to care about the region code. If its different from the one of your drive, it won't work.

Thats kinda strange that you said you cant do it. I actually did it...im in region 4 and i ripped region 1 DVDs (i couldnt actually play them, but i could rip them). But...maybe i was lucky...or it was magic or something...i reckon just give it a go and see if it works.

Is your drive locked on RC4? No??? Then its possible to rip it.
If you can't play this in your Softwareplayer, then the softwareplayer is locked either.
Listen:
Do you think its reasonable that a DVD-drive, which is protected by a regioncode is able to rip a dvd with a non-matching regioncode, but not able to play it? Think about, it makes no sense.
My DVD-drive is a RPC-1 (means, without region code), and iam able to watch every DVD i want, and I don't have to care about the regioncode. But i have to change the regioncode of PowerDVD and Windows, no problem if you now how to. Look after DVD-Genie and all your problems should be gone (with unlocked drives only).
P.S.: Please be patient if your first attempt to understand what I am talking about fails. To much alcohol and a foreign language isn't a god combination for me ;)

actually.. the thing is the following: there's ways to play DVDs of non matching region codes when using tools like the region free tool from www.elby.de or dvd genie as they trick the player into believing that the region codes already match.
When you rip the situation is different: when you use a ripper that uses winIO (dvd decrypter 2.4, smartripper in winIO mode, vStrip in regular file access mode) then the region code does not matter. However, most disc authentication mechanisms work in ASPI mode where you cannot have a region code mismatch or things won't work. vStrip is your best shot here as it really only needs ASPI when you have the 1.00GB VOBs (pretty rare cases).. otherwise it uses WinIO. DVD Decrypter 3.0 is fully ASPI based, SmartRipper can do both (dunno which mode it prefers.. I only use vStrip).
Hope that answers your question.

I tried to use smartripper with the region 1 movie (my dvd is currently region 2)
and it passed the authontication part (the "popup" before it loads) and I saw it wrote there winIO but when I tried to actually rip it, it didnt let me. what managed to do is to copy it without un-locking the key, and from the harddisk making them regionless - takes twice the time but worked...
thanks

Ok have i got news for u
I own a laptop with R2 RPC2 locked dvd i have not applied any firm ware or patches of any sort but most of the DVDs i rip are region 1 and they work fine if not at the same speed that i can rip R2s
I use smartripper 2.31 ( i have not upgraded cos any version above that including the newest 2.41 dont seem to allow me to rip region 1 DVDs) i have no idea why but since 2.31 works perfectly i am happy
LOL!!:D

Hi:
I have a DVD-Rom from Samsung, model 616T (48x/16x). This drive currently is locked in region 1 (USA). But my zone is region 2 (Portugal). I only have 3 more shots to change the region.
My problem is that I thought the only way of ripping the region 1 DVD’s was using vStrip, like Doom9 says. But every time, after I add the Vob files in the Input menu, and then press Run, a message saying, “vStrip could not decrypt [@LBA2]” appears.
The first time I tried this, the DVD-Rom drive was locked in region 2, then I tried a region 1 DVD, and the exact same message appears.
I like to order DVD’s from the Sates, and also to buy some here in Portugal, but how I am going to rip them to the hard-drive?
I can’t run the DVD movie to try to authenticate the drive because the region is different, and I can’t change it all the time (only 3 more, remember?) :(
I am using all the software that came in Gnot 0.23 beta package. VStrip is 0.8d version
Thanks in advance,
Rui

Ok, if anyone knows stuff about DVD Region Locking and how you can rip from a dvd NOT from your region then its ME!
The Logical Drive Region Lock ONLY comes into play when you try and READ sectors from the disc. It has nothing to do with the Authentication stage. It is possible to authenticate a disc, no matter what the disc / drive region settings are.
If a drive is region locked, there is NO way to get around that. You cannot fool the DRIVE into thinking it is set to a different region using software. The likes of DVD Region Killer 2 and DVD Genie can only fool software players into thinking that the drive is a particular region.
For some strange reason, when reading the disc in WinIO mode it doesnt matter what region the disc is, nor the drive itself. Reading in ASPI mode is a totally different ball game, the drive (internally) checks its region against the one of the disc and if the two dont match, it just returns an error. Unfortunatly there is nothing you can do about that - Well, other than getting a region free firmware from www.firmware.fr.st ;)
So....in answer to your question ofirmantis, Yes, you can rip a dvd from a region other than your own but you need to use a WinIO based ripper (as Doom9 already mentioned). I dont know why the new version of SmartRipper doesnt work. It supports both methods of reading but obviously Tron has a bug in there somewhere that makes it rely on some ASPI code (which is failing), when it shouldnt do and instead just default to WinIO mode.
I hope that all makes sense....its very early in the morning ;)

I use smartripper 2.41 and even though it works in winIO mode, it wouldnt let me rip a region 1 dvd, unless I do what I mentioned earlier - rip it without decrypting it and the finding the key and decrypting from the harddisk - I just made that way 2 movies.
So why smart ripper won't let me decrypt the files when its iin winIO mode?
btw - it might be possible as doom9 said, with vstrip, but since I cant understand anything from its GUI, I never understand how to use it properly... :)
thanks anyway..

I would like to share my experiences with you guys.
I have a Samsung DVD-ROM 616T (16x), and it is locked in region 2. I have some region 1 DVD’s that I would like to convert to DivX4. The problem was that I couldn’t rip them with the latest Smart Ripper or DVD Decryptor, like I said in my post above.
I couldn’t use vStrip either because this software needs that the drive be authenticated, and I couldn’t do that because I couldn’t play the movies (region locked).
So the solution is: use Smart Ripper 2.31, like jeremymacmull said above, or use DVD Decryptor 2.4, like Doom9 said above.
Or, if you want to use the latest vStrip that comes with the Gnot 0.23 package you must do like this: first open Smart Ripper 2.40 (the one that comes with the Gnot package also), then let it recognize and authenticate the DVD drive, but don’t try to rip with it. After this, you just open vStrip and proceed like Doom9 says in his vStrip guide. The DVD was authenticated with Smart Ripper, and all goes well.
This way I can rip just about every DVD from every region on earth, in spite my DVD drive is locked in region 2. Maybe TheWEF should place Smart Ripper 2.31 in the Gnot package instead of 2.40 version :D
Hope this helps someone,

You might well not be able to rip them with DVD Decrypter 3, but you can (should) still be able to use it to authenticate the drive/disc s that you can then use vStrip or whatever.
