I am currently trying to make a low resolution version of a short made by a friend of mine. The last couple of encodes resulted in a file ZoomPlayer refused to play, citing a "missing codec" error.
That error message is what I usually get when a file is corrupted (when the encode is aborted, for instance), so I was wondering if anyone was having the same trouble as I. The source is an intermediate Lagarith YV12 file.

When file is corrupted it don't plays. It was like this for all versions of x.264 I ever used. If you abort encoding it just stops working and does not finish writing all data mp4 needs to play normally (I guess).

first of all always test such things in graphedit to make sure its not a playerside problem
than post your exact commandline used

GmorG McRoth: I didn't abort the encoding, what I said was that the reported error was indentical to what happens to me in suich cases.
bond: I never checked a file with GraphEdit, how would I go aout doing so? By the way, I used MeGUI's HQ Insane profile with a couple of customizations. The CLI commands were:
x264.exe --pass 3 --bitrate 860 --stats ".stats" --ref 16 --mixed-refs --no-fast-pskip --bframes 3 --b-pyramid --b-rdo --bime --weightb --direct auto --filter -2,-1 --subme 7 --trellis 2 --analyse all --8x8dct --vbv-maxrate 25000 --me umh --thread-input --progress --no-dct-decimate --no-psnr --output "" ""
I also enabled the "turbo" option.

I unistalled and reinstalled ffdshow and the Haali splitter and now the file plays normally.
