I am very new to Video encoding, all I know is some basic stuff in VirtualdubMod.
I tried searcing for this subject, to no avail.
I am trying to cut a part of a VOB file, and encode it to Xvid avi, to be played with a stand alone Divx player.
When I open the VOB file in VdubMod (or Vdub-Mpeg2), Vdub reports frame size 352X576, while I know that my VOB is 704X576, is this normal?
If I just accept the size which is reported, and encode to an avi file, I get a very distorted picture (aspect ratio is probably completely wrong)
How do I go about this?

You have to resize the video to 704X576 within VirtualDub.

Short and clear.
Thanks.

"I know that my VOB is 704X576"

How did you get this information?

I find VirtualdubMod to be very trustworthy with its resolution. I would say your vob is 352X576 and needs to be resized. Mpeg2 files have a bit or flag or something in the header (correct my terminology please) that tells the media player what aspect ratio the video is meant to be displayed in. Unfortunately it is ignored in mpeg4s.
