I have a mpeg video that I can open and cut (trim) with
vdubmod.
Can I still somehow 'direct stream copy' the edit to an mpeg file?
vdubmod says i cannot use the directstream copy..
Or else I will have to save it in another format like divx or xvid

Hi!
Try using "MPEG2Cut.exe" or similar, instead of VirtualDubMOD...

Just so you know MPEG2 and 4 can only be cut on a key frame so you may get some unwanted frames included.

The question is more like - how to open and also SAVE mpeg TO mpeg using VirtualDub mod.
I got the same problem, tough with simple mpeg1 :) The animation include some bogus data at start and then valid mpeg1 streams. MediaPlayer, for example, open it and play. BSplayer crash... VirtualDub mod open it, when forced mpeg, but can't save it :(
TMPEGEncoder (witch was used in the start to create the file, as I can see from the header) refuse to open it, so the mpeg tools there aren't usable.
Is there any plugin to allow just direct stream copy in Virtual Dub of at least mpeg1 files??? :(

No, try Cuttermaran.

I must admint I would much rather see a plugin for VirtualDub that give the me export as direct stream copy to mpeg/mpeg2 files... :o
Let's hope the Cuttermaran
will be usefull... :(
PS. I find this Cuttermaran entierly useless, as it require the NetFramework, so, another reason for a usable PLUGIN into VirtualDub. No, I won't install any M$ crap on my system anymore. Ever. Period.

If I got everything said here correct, then I'd like to say that my VDubMod 1.5.10.2 build 2540 does open the mpeg2 file (by which I mean a ripped DVD source) and it does allow saving it in direct stream mode, but the result I get is not playable. Mplayer says file contains errors and plays only audio. Perhaps I cut the video at the wrong place. All those I, P and B frames..
I actually just wanted to split my VOB file before encoding.

VirtualDub(Mod) does NOT allow for saving to MPEG-2. It may have some glitch that lets you save it in direct stream copy mode, but as you have already experienced it will not work.
Vidomi is an outdated encoder, but it can be used to edit MPEG-2 or .VOB files. Load your video, click Options > General options and check "Ignore settings and use MPEG copy mode," then it will create a new file from your selection with no re-rendering. Just be sure to uncheck all codecs during the install.

Thanks, I've already resolved my issue using DGIndex to create separate D2V for every episode I wanted to encode.

Not exactly, i still use an old program like 'web flix' that can cut on accurate frame base, means that the program make one new kf where needed.
dont know about newer progs.
would not be hard to get the same feature i vdub i think

nekostephan - well, that's interesting. My copy of VirtualDub Mod 1.5.10.2 build 2542 don't allow me direct stream copy saving mpeg... :(
Maybe they fixed the bug?
movmasty - Virtual Dub (not Mod) can open and in direct stream copy save mpeg1 and/or also mpeg2 movies? Really?

No, i meant can direct stream save avi in frame accurate mode, w/o looking the kf, just reencoding few frames until the first kf. this in beta VD 1.7
some problem if the vid is encoded with a custom matrix thought.
