convert dvd to avi or mpeg

I have a home made dvd given to me and would like to convert to AVI or MPEG so I can edit it.
Can anyone suggest software to covert DVD to AVI or MPEG.

use a ripping program to extract the VOB files. Run the VOBs through DGIndex to make a D2V (and demux the audio at the same time)

Make an avisynth script to wrap up the audio and video, feed that avisynth script to virtualdub and do what you need. If you need to get it into an NLE like Premiere or Avid, good luck :)

If the goal is to put the result on DVD, Heroine Virtual's Cinelerra fork (http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3) can edit mpeg via libmpeg3, so you won't have to convert-edit-convert. You'll need 1+ GNU/Linux box with a recent kernel.
