I would welcome some suggestions on transferring camcorder tape to dvd. I have seen both software [with cables] and hardware. Which system has been the best? This is for home use. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
In general, there are two main types of consumer camcorder technologies.
Analog camcorders require capture equipment on your PC to capture analog vidoe and audio -- PCI cards typically, sometimes video cards (these are called VIVO cards). There are also external analog capture devices, that typically attach via USB.
Digital camcorders typically use a video encoding technology called DV. These "captures" to PC are effectively digital file copies, and the connection to the PC is made via FireWire (IEEE-1394). This is either built in or added to your PC via PCI card.
Please first determine which kind of camcorder you are using. If analog, you will find our FAQ and Guide helpful. If DV, we have a separate forum specific to both the DV encoding technology, as well as connecting and using DV camcorders. If digital but not DV, you will need to look at the format (such as camcorders that record to DVD) to know where to turn next.
I think the announcement in this capture forum will be helpful, too.
