Iv'e got the dvd set of Full Metal alchemist and have had some problems trying to rip the episodes.

Basicly what I'm trying to do is rip each episode (dvd decrypter in ifo mode) and encode it to x264 (megui) for storage.

Theres 4 episodes per disc and all of the episodes are in one title, 8 chapters long each.
What I've been doing is ripping each episode using dvd decrypter in IFO mode by selecting the chapters that comprise of that episode. The only problem is that dvd decrypter says there are 2 angles. First off I'm not sure which one is correct. I have tried both of them separately but they both look exactly the same.

After ripping, the video and audio appear to be ok but when I try to rip the subtitles from the ifo file generated by dvd decrypter the subtitles are completely out of sync and wrong. The only way I've been able to get workable subtitles is to use mencoder to rip them separatly from the command line but I'd really like to try to avoid that if possible.

Am I using the correct method to rip a multiangle dvd? Should I be using some other tools instead? Any link to basic tutorial or whatnot would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Well, to determine which angle you like, play the movie in a software player and change the angles at the appropriate points. You'll see which one you want - generally, angle 1 is the theatrical release and you'll keep that, but I have seen angles used for lots of things.

The subtitles (and the audio) may have a delay. Check this out in DVD Decrypter.

You may like to try a movie only rip (well one for each ep) in RipIt4Me (http://www.ripit4me.org/).

Thanks for the advice!

The subtitles do have a delay but they arent just offsetted by a certain time. They are also stretched out almost twice as long as the movie. When ripped using mencoder they just have to have a delay added like you said.
Is this an angle issue or something else?

If they are stretched out, it sounds like you are encoding in 1/2 D1 resolution. Progs/software players often throw fits in this situation but any decent standalone will play them correctly.

the subtitle issue is weird... the FMA discs are pretty ordinary fare for FUNimation.

the feature is only multiangle for openings, closings and next-ep previews. the only differences will be japanese v english text on the screen.

offhand i can't recall which angle is first (and which is placed on top of it in sections), but i'm guessing angle 1 will be english and angle 2 japanese. you can check this yourself :)

now... to rip it, use DVDdecrypter in ifo mode, pick an angle and hit go. tell it to rip the subs into a vob, and everything else as demux (so you get 1 IFO, 1 VOB that's real small, 1 m2v and several ac3's). when ripped this way there should be no problems with subtitle lengths or AV sync.

there's no additional copy protection on FUNimation discs thus far, so that end of things should be fine (wish i could say the same for Geneon, who ripguard their stuff now).

btw, which region are your discs? i'm talking mainly about the R1's above, but it applies to the R4's as well.
