View Full Version : Maximum compression?

I'm trying to compress files to view on my Zaurus SL-5500. I've tried a demo of a commercial program that compresses a 15 min file using an xvid codec to 5Meg. I feel that I ought to be able to do the same using Virtualdub, but my best efforts have been arround 50 Meg! If I use DivX for encoding the file I can get much lower, but I don't have a DivX codec for the Zaurus.

What are the key elements I should be looking at to get the highest compression with Xvid, please?

Smallest file you could possibly get: single pass, target quantizer 31. It'll be ugly though. If you need it still smaller, you can use a custom matrix like sharktooth's EQMv3 ULR.

Of course, you need to resize for your screen size, and probably filter it pretty hard beforehand. If doing that gets it down far enough, then you can run a normal 2-pass (make sure the first pass is run with a zone of q10 or 15, or it'll probably be way off, and you'll need to turn the b-ratio way down).

GMC (and sometimes qpel) will help, but the chances that your portable supports them are low to nil.

15mins of video(+audio?) on 5MB, are you sure about this number?
That's around 45Kbps and even for audio is a very low bitrate. The least I got out of Xvid at 320x240 is around 3-5MB/Min but any less than that is un-watchable.

This is the Zaurus SL-5500 player who's performance I'm trying to match:
