Best thing to do is go to a store that has one on display and look yourself.
I found it distracting. I ended up looking at the colors change instead of the movie. But I'm sure if I had it home I would get used to it and not even notice it. A lot of people seem to like it. I believe you can turn it off if you don't like it.

personaly if *I* was paying the money for a highend light I'd grab a grow light
a metal halide grow light
arguable the best light there is plants next to sunlight; just as good for humans as well

You can get a much better quality TV for the price they want for an Ambilight. It seems more like a novelty to me.

i have seen one in a shop here in europe with ambient light,(people in europe have no clue how to demonstrated their gadgets, seem people have to much money to fork, even projectors are not in dark rooms)
Its hard to see, because it is not like at homefor hours and hour ,
i have seen this system for 3 minutes only with other tv around which is very distracting , I can not tell if it is good or not.so maybe one of yo have this system installed at home and could tell us if it s really better for the eyes.
one scrreen has a white surface behind. this surface is screwed behind the screen.that s the only one which was working in ambient light, but still, if you are not in a dark room...it is useless.

Placing a light-source to the side(s) or directly behind a CRT style TV is actually quite (if unintentionally) common in a lot of peoples homes!
Philips has simply taken the next step with their "ambilight" method.... but you can quite easily do something similar yourself with any flat-panel display

With "great contrast and stunning detail"!
Check out model number KDL-40W2000. For around €2,500.00 - €3,000.00 (£1,500.00 - £2,000.00) :)
Cheers
