use vsfilter and a .ssa file, or you could go for rendering it in a real effecting software(adobe premiere/after effects, vegas video, final cut, combustion, etc)

you may want to try something like Aegisub (http://aegisub.cellosoft.com/) .

If commercial package was the only solution why would write in AviSynth forum???
You may like to look into AVSLib for animation & text handling.
Otherwise playing with Subtitle with different font size for every
10 frames of so, may do it (with background video with expolosions).

Did you try SubtitleEx plugin by Basilik on several low height black clips,
with some transition effects (by vcmohan) addition,
and results overlayed with original clip?

Because these plugins/scripts are unproper for anything more than simple text moving lineary around. Animating text, glows, and blurs around can get extremely messy by using pure script.
SSA on the other side is free and will let you do slightly more easily basic/semi-basic stuff.
