Question: What do I have to do , in order to work with the output of the Canopus device in the same way as I did with the output of the Plextor.

And this is the story:

I used to capture with Plextor’s ConvertX PX-M402U this external device could capture in a divx format, that I could trim with VirtualDub and after that I could use it as input in AVI2SVCD (in fact D2SROBA). My result were very good.
F.i. I got very small Mpeg files wich I could use in DVDLab. The result sometimes 3 or 4 movie on one DVD!
But Plextor’s ConvertX PX-M402U is using drivers sometimes it would not capture so I bought the external Canopus ADVC-55 Advanced DV Converter.
The Canopus ADVC-55 Advanced DV Converter capture device gives no problems. It is very good!!

But!! Now if I try to use the Canopus DV AVI as input in AVI2SVCD the program crashed.
And it will be impossibly to make those files I need to use in DVDLab.

About my DV AVI file:

Gspot says “This a corrupt AVI Header” “This file is not likely to playable”

And that is not fully true, BSPlayer can play this file without any problem..
Gspot cant tell anything about codecs. Gspot says: “n.a.”

And now reading on the forum I came across the following:
Question: ” So can i change my captured avi files from one coded to an other, without re-writing or re-capturing ?”

Answer: “Absolutely!”

Maybe your DV AVI file is type-1, and you need type-2 to process it. Get one of the free type-1/type-2 convertes (see stickies in this forum), convert to type-2, and try again.

Thanks bb for Your answer but this not the solution.

I tried to convert the file with the Ulead Type 1 Type 2 converter.

But this program says "unable to convert this file because it is not a DV type 1 file".

Do You think I can try again something else?

Did you use a hex editor (in read mode) or Nic's fourcc tool to verify the fourcc?

Yes, the four cc may be the problem, as Canopus uses a different one than everybody else in the business. Get the four cc changer, e.g. from Doom9's download page, and set the AVI's four cc to "dvsd".

The freeware converter available at the following link MAY help you resolve your problem:

Well I allready had tried this converter before. But it has some curious formats for the target file.
And now I tried some very strange one. The specification says:

“Canopus DV Reference AVI”
“This file is compatible with all major Video Editing applications.
This file can not be moved on the hard drive!
File size is unlimited”

It makes a small avi file and besides 3 files with same filename and extensions .000 .001 .002
These files belong together.

Well to make this a short story. I have put the small avi file as input in avi2svcd and everything worked. No problem any further! Thanks You all.

So, are you saying that the program I suggested (CanopusDVFileConverter) did or didn't work for you?

I told that I had tried this program allready. But after your message I tried it again and I was telling above that the only output I could use was a very strange file.
I never had seen such! And at first I did not believe that I could use it. I'm telling this with so much words because I want to tell everybody that such strange files can easily be input in AVI2SVCD in order to make an MPEG file of it
So Yes it worked! And so You were right.
Kindly Greetings Jan Vroegop

Yes it's a "reference" AVI file type. The numbered files contain the actual frame data if I remember correctly. Quite rare.
