Hi,

I've had a few dvd's lately where they have required subtitles to be left in place for speech from foreign actors in part of the film.

When i try to leave in the English subtitles that are the smallest, the subtitles display all the time, not just when the foreign actor talks.

Can you help how to get round that.

I know my pioneer dvd player plays subtitles automatically when they are included in the final stream, hence i remove all subtitles to ensure this doesn't happen.

Thanx

Hi!I know my pioneer dvd player plays subtitles automatically when they are included in the final stream, hence i remove all subtitles to ensure this doesn't happen.1) Don't remove any subtitle streams (They're tiny).

2) Simply select "Subtitles - Off" from the DVD's menu screen or press the "Subtitles" button on your remote control until it shows "Subtitles Off" onscreen...

thanks, i've got that bit covererd, but the issue is that if i include the subtitles or not on an english film such as Syriani which has some subtitles in english, all that happens is the subtitles appear all the way through the film, not just the foreign language part.

1) Please post your DVD Shrink settings and checkmarks under "Edit>>"Preferences">>Stream Selections

2) If you select "Subtitles Off" from the screen menu (or the remote), I don't believe there's any way the English subtitles would show all the way throughout the movie...

Qouted: "When i try to leave in the English subtitles that are the smallest, the subtitles display all the time, not just when the foreign actor talks."

I assume you're doing movie-only copies, since full-disk copies in DVD Shrink save all of the original's IFO commands. If all you'd like is for the "forced" subtitles to activate during foreign language parts (while all other subtitle streams stay dormant) here's a few steps that have worked well for me.

1) Determine which subtitle stream your translation subs are in. To do this, try using your software player to toggle between the various subtitles on the original files. Once you're reasonably sure you know which ones they are, write down which stream they are. Let's say the subs you'd like are on the 3rd subtitle stream. Write 'er down so you'll not forget them later.
2) Open DVD Shrink and load your project. Using "Reauthor" mode like usual, you can either elliminate the other streams (let's say 1, 2, 4, 5, ect) or simply leave them be (as setarip_old stated, they don't take up much space). Right-click on the title you've chosen (directly under the "DVD Compilation" statement), and choose "select default streams." You can then set the subtitle stream of your choice (hypothetically stream 3 from our example) to automatically display.

It's not a "true" way of doing forced subtitles, but it gets the job done. This method can also be applied to audio streams; say you buy a foreign film that's dubbed in your language, and you'd rather the film start with that particular audio stream while keeping the "true" language audio intact.

@thewonderer

You're very welcome! Hope it all works out just the way you want it to. Either way, give us a post!

When I got my first recorder, I was one of those guys whose first experience trying to copy a movie resulted in 1) Getting a scrambled signal since I didn't know a thing about decrypting and 2) Too darned big to burn! I'd given up completely when I stumbled quite by accident upon this website and these forums. Ah, the difference it all made! Speaking of difference, I only paid just over $30 for either of my current DVD burners. My first burner cost me right around $200, and that was only four years ago. :rolleyes:
