View Full Version : No Subtitles?

I've been trying to convert anime DVDs into AVI files via AutoGK, and I've been having some major problems with getting the subtitles to show up. Yet it's odd though, because sometimes they'll show up, but most of the time they won't. And I can't see any peticular pattern as to how to get the subtitles to show up. I don't use the external subs option, and yet fortunately even after the converstion process is completed for a given job, the subtitle files will be present in the temp folder that's automatically created during the converstion process. I'll fairly positive it has something to do with VobSub and that perhaps during the installation procedure something didn't go right. Or maybe at the very least, even with the videos I have created that I can take the subtitle files in the temp folder and use VirtualDubMod or VobSub to burn the subtitles into the video somehow. I tried the CTRL+F8 option and manually pointing to the subtitles files and having the video created again, but that doesn't seem to work either.
Anywho, any advice or guidance pretaining to this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem and I'm investigating issues with vobsub as well. In my case, when I look in the agk_tmp directory I see an empty file with a .sub extension. I presume this should not be empty. I'm figuring out how the options in the .idx file affect vobsub so I can figure out how it is supposed to work.
Which version are you using? I started having the problem with 2.27 (after using 2.27 for a long time without any problems) and experienced the same issues with 2.36b (beta). The subtitles don't show up in Preview or in the encoded file. But the subtitles definitely are there on the original DVD source.

I use DVDShrink 3.2 to rip a DVD to harddisc and to cut the DVD back to the main movie and to remove audiostreams and subtitles that I do not need.
When I run this "new DVD" with PowerDVD6, it plays wunderfull. I can see the subtitles.
But when I tried to convert the 9 DVDs to XVID, I could select the subtitles with Gordian knot in all cases, but the subtitles only appeared in the XVID files in 3 cases. The preview function is correct: If I do not see it in the preview, I also do not get it in the final XVID version.
Why is PowerDVD able to play the original subtitles, why can I select the subtitles with AutoGK and why does AutoGK then only process the subtitles properly in 3 out of 9 times? I have all the logfiles and see nothing special (but I am no expert at all).

Yes always the same problem no subs but if i rip them manual with vobsub it finds the subs very strange....
If i use simple divx with the same movie the subs are correctly ripped.

I do have the same problem and cannot se how to work it out. Unfortunatelly there are not so much interest in subtitles in this forum, and no answear has been given why the subtitle function in auto gk doesn't work.
I can manually with vobsub extract the subtitle to an .sub and .idx file. If you then put them in the same folder as the .avi movie with the same name, you can watch the movie with the windows media player which will show the subtitle then. But the subtitle won't be burned in though, which I would like it to be.

After twiddling around with autoGK (all 2.3x versions), there are couple of reasons why we cannot get subtittle to show properly.
1. If there are more than 1 subtittle, sometimes I found the autoGK automated vobsub picking the wrong sub ID, even though I already check the subtittle I want. Most often, this will give 0 byte .sub file.
2. Out of sync subtittle. For example, many anime DVDs consists of continuous vob files for multiple episodes, instead of each episode having its own ifo. I use Nero recode to split the episodes into their own chunks. The vobs play fine in any software, and subtittle is fine too. Problem is, for some reason, vobsub doesn't know that the episodes has been chunked, and it doesn't compensate the timing of the subtittle. So, let's say I have episode 2, which is on the original DVD is starting at 23min after the first episode. Even though I alrady split the peisode so it is on its own vob and ifo, vobsub still thinks the subtitle starts at point 23 min. Compared to problem #1, autogk will produce proper .sub, but I can look at the .idx file, and the timing of the subtitles are all non-compensated. I have to use sub-resync to manually adjust them.
So, my solution so far is to rip the subtitle independently using vobsub (making sure it rips the correct sub ID for multiple subtitles), and resync them. Definitely a hassle and not as "auto" as autoGK supposed to be.

That is true, I too have discovered the same problem. Even if I only have one subtitle or that I have choosed one with with decrypter or dvd shrink, still it doesn't work.

Ripping subtitles with vobsub isn't unfortunately as easy as it should be. Some times I have to run it several times to get it right, and if there are more than one program chain then it will really get tricky.
So as you write, the problem is that vobsub doesn't do its job cerrectly.
But with resync what do you mean, sync the time with the movie or get the subtitle burnt in the movie.
I want to know how or possible, to burn in an existing .sub subtitle with a.avi movie
