Adding 50 avi into container with chapters?

I have 50 avi files that I'd like to stick into a container so I can playback the files and navigate from file to file using chapters.

What's the best way to do that?

And for future reference, I got the 50 avi files by ripping it from a DVD. Is there a recommended way to convert a DVD into a container with chapters?

to answer your second question first, there are many ways. I personally use a MeGUI based approach, but do a fair whack of it by hand.
To your first question, mkvmerge's chapter editor will do what you want, then just append all the avis as input to the mkv muxer and specify the chapter file to be used.

How do I create a chapter file?

I've used mkvmerge to create a mkv file, but I had hoped it would automatically stick chapters between files. But I guess I need to input a chapter file manually?

I think he's asking if it can AUTOMATICALLY insert chapter points at the beginning of each file.
