I am currently trying to rip some of my Blue Gender DVD's for conversion into an Avi file for a Cowon A2. I've used DVD decrypter to rip the vob file to the harddrive and I've loaded it up into Virtual Dub Mod. But there is a one really big problem.

The DVD's are dual audio, english and japanese. The makers of the DVD did a good job and made it so in the opening and ending parts of the show they would have credits in the right language. This doesnt work well for ripping though. When I try to watch or reencode the vob/mpeg2 file every 5 or so seconds during the opening and ending the video will skip back to show the credits in the other language.

Is there some way to isolate the ones I want without manualy choosing the parts, slicing what I need and then recombining them? I've thought about just downloading the episodes but they are all OGM with Vorbis sound, the cowon doesnt support ogm files so it would need to be converted to avi and MP3. I'd rather not take the hit in quality if I could.

Welcome to doom9

This stuff is probably in angles.

Load the ripped DVD in PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html). Open the movie PGC by double clicking on it.

If there are angles, they will be noted.

You can preview the cell of each angle by clicking on the |> on the right and determine which angle you wanna keep.

There is also a Del angles button at the bottom. Click on that to remove various angles.

If the stuff is not in angles, you can remove the cells you don't want.

After you have finished editing the PGC, run FixVTS (www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS) over the movie's domain.

Uhh is there some kinda of tutorial for this program? I can barely make heads or tails of it. This is becoming such a pain -_- its because of things like this I hate to work with DVD's.

It would probably be easier for you to re-rip with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode. That will separate the angles.

haha! pwn3d by FUNimation.

not only is it hard to rip, but the max bitrate is limited to ~7200 kbps, and auto-IVTC (soft pulldown) must be turned off to maintain consistent GOP structure for multiangle.

...so the quality is crap.

yeah, choose an angle (just go with english, unless you'd prefer the jap openings/closings/recaps/previews in japanese with subs) in DVDdecrypter and back that one up.

really the only difference is the text, but recently FUNimation have started deinterlacing the english open/closings, in which case you'd want the far more detailed japanese ones.

death to editors who deinterlace everything even if all they intend to do is overlay some sodding text! grrr. ADV have been doing it as well, and it looks awful.

Well using DVD decypters IFO and using angle 1 it ripped everything great. The quality is perfect and they are interlaced Mug Funky. I'm hoping the conversion to Xvid & MP3 will go well :)

Sorry about this I'm pretty new to DVD ripping. This is only my second rip. All my other video experience is in editing/converting and an occasional DVDorVCD.
