DVD-9 -> 1 DVD±R guides ut to date?

I couldn´t help noticing that most of the advanced DVD-9 -> 1 DVD±R guides was pretty old. Is this because this still is the way to go to get the best possible backup copy or have the "scene" found new ways/programs that gives an even better copy than the ones described in the guides on this website?

I want to be able to strip extras (some or all), unnecessary audio tracks and the so annoying warning screens etc.

I also wonder how I can compress the extras but leave the main movie untouched if I need to loose a few MB?
