First I just want to say sorry if this is a stupid question but I have no idea what to do and would really appreciate any advice

Basically I've never had a problem backing up DVDs before using DVD decrypter and up to 8x DVD-Rs even though they always burnt at 2x speed (even though MAX option is selected and my Sony DVD writer is Im sure at least 8 speed). The other day I bought 100 Verbatim 16x DVD-Rs in packs of 25 and now every time I write one and try and verify it (and Ive tried about a dozen from various packs), it wont complete the verification saying there is an uncorrectable error. Have tried to find an answer to my problem but all I could come up with searching the forums is that it's not a good idea to burn DVDs much slower than their rated speed- is that really true because I was always told (back in the days when CD-Rs were expensive and DVD-Rs didnt exist) slower was more accurate? and if that is what I am doing wrong how on earth do I get DVD decryper to write quicker? (I mean since I had the speed option set to max I just assumed that that was the fastest it could burn isos)

Please please help!

Try using ImgBurn instead of DVD Decrypter. Try manually setting the burn speed to half the rated burn speed of your drive. "MAX" seems to be more prone to failure.

It's also probable that your new media cannot burn properly below 4X, and the attempt at 2X burning is the problem.

Replace your drive with a faster one, and even then it's best to maintain the "half the rated speed" formula.

Hi!

Before you buy a new burner, you might want to check to see if there is a firmware update available for your burner. Such updates typically allow your burner to more properly deal with faster rated burnable media...

True, I always forget about firmware patches.

thanks for all of you who took the time to reply is much appreciated.

Tried to find a firmware patch for my drive but couldnt (its a Sony DW-D22A which I read is a re-branded Liteon and rubbish anyway?)
So went to my brothers house and borrowed his 8x Freecom classic external writer- tried writing in DVDdecrypter with this selecting the 8x option but it only writes at 4x (I cant understand why this happens but is still twice as fast as I was doing before) and this seems to work ok so I think you were right and these discs just wont write properly at anything less i.e. 2x (I just cant understand why these writers dont write at close to what they say theyre supposed to but at least its working!!)

anyway thanks again guys!

Did you try actually selecting 4X from the speed selection? I seem to remember reading somewhere (It probably wasn't about ImgBurn) about a program that would test the maximum rating of the media, and if it determined it wouldn't work for whatever reason it would drop to the slowest speed.

You should also make sure that your DVD burner IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller is set to Ultra DMA Mode 2 and not PIO Mode, which is another reason you may only be able to burn at 2X.
