I would think this is exactly what Silent Hill (RC2 Germany) is all about. Won't the people who play their original DVDs thru a PC system and companies like Nero, Cyberlink (who have legally acquired the right to decipher CSS and offer their players commercially to the market) be happy?
All the major rippers beat Silent Hill within a week. But, it's bad when you can't play your original, and it's illegal - the product you purchased must be able to be used. The DVD spec calls for UDF 1.02, not a corruption of it. The studios are intentionally breaking their DVDs.
I hope the market rails against this insidious behaviour by the studios, just as it did with rootkits.

Hi!
Regarding copying/ripping such DVDs, it appears to have already been addressed by "RipIt4Me" v.1.4.15.0, released on 9/28/06:Added IFO/BUP patching: Bad IFO files are replaced with the corresponding BUPs.

Funny quote over there:
I can't wait for this. Now I can rent a DVD, watch it, then return it and complain that it won't play on my computer, and get my money back...
