I have been doing all my DVDs using CCE for several years. I insist on doing my DVDs using CCE. I have several people ask me why I do it and I tell them it produces the best quality. I have others say they use CloneDVD2 and cannot tell the difference. I don't have an HDTV yet so it is really hard for me to check the differences. Has anyone tested this (CCE vs CloneDVD2 or others)? Thanks.

You shouldn't realy ask whats best as you will normaly get a million different answers, whats best for you is what matters.
Having said that CCE is the best encoder by far in my opinion although should you be pushed for time or there is only minimal compression needed Slysoft CloneDVD or DVD Shrink can produce good results.

ClondDVD2 is a transcoder while CCE is an encoder. Generally if the DVD you want to copy doesn't require compressing below 80% of its original size, then most decent transcoders will do as good a job as CCE however once you go below that 80% compresson then encoders are better.

I agree with bonehead that CCE is the best encoder.

From what I have read after doing an exhaustive search is that CCE is the best way to go for the best possible quality. I have found a lot of information on it. I will continue to use CCE for movies that need to be compressed to fit on a DVD5 and will use CloneDVD2 for movies that require no compression at all. I only do the main movie so I can get the best possible bitrate. Thanks for the answers.

If you use Dvd Shrink on a high bitrate movie that needs say 95% compression, not every frame will be touched preserving the orginal quality of most of the frames.

You can use the Subtract function of AviSynth to compare the orginal with the 95% version. You will find only every 3rd or 4th frame is trancoded and of that only a small portion of the frame, typically around the borders is compressed.

But if you use CCE, every frame has to be re-encoded.

You can't take percentage alone. You also have to consider bitrate.
