View Full Version : DVD subtitles in opaque box?

Hi all,

The question is about creating new subtitles from scratch for DVD - video and audio already prepared. I'm pretty well versed with SubtitleCreator and MaestroSBT, but in neither program I can't see option to create (generate) bitmaps with the text on an opaque box - so no outline or shadow. For example, SubtitleWorkshop has an option for saving *.ssa with such attributes, but where to go next? Maybe another program or some hidden settings in these two? I don't see anything in DVDSubEdit either, which was kinda my last hope... :)

And, authoring with MuxMan, of course...

In DVDSubEdit set the b to 15 and choose your desired color. You can also "Crop subpick background".

enjoy,

Hi,

With SubtitleCreator it is really easy to do that:

Just unclick the Transp. box next to the Background Color button before generating your SUP file. You can even change the Color of the background.

Cheers

Thank you, I just found out that myself too, but haven't tried it actually. Will do soon. But... (nitpick) I was hoping for separate boxes for each row cause that's what I'm used to and I think looks better. (/nitpick)

But nevermind, I'm sure this will work very good too. Thanks to both for the answers!

Hi manusse,

I've tried your sugestion and I succeeded, but I'm not entirely satisfied with the result.

First of all, there is a bug: the top left pixel of the background is rendered white. Don't know if it is a result of my setup, or a real bug. I just changed the colour of the background to black (exchanged it with the outline colour) and disabled transparency. Otherwise everything is more or less at defaults (at least the colours, I think). Please let me know if I should send you or Paddington some more info (bug report).

Other thing is about aesthetics. Such subtitles look very ugly IMHO because the background is with fixed size, and not adapting to the text. So, when there is a single word in a subtitle... I don't know, it looks funny to me. Maybe my eye is just used to this kind of subtitles. Maybe this could be a feature request for the program (variable heigth/width of the background adapting to the dimensions of the text)?

Nevertheless, these are minor issues I'm glad it worked and I thank you and Paddington for this wonderful program!

DVDSubEdit can crop the background to be just around the subtitle itself. Give it a shot, you might like it better....
