guys when i try to capture avi using virtual dub... in the compression it uses HCW2 and when i record it the file is huge and i can't bring it back into virtual dub... i tryed to find HCW2 codec bah failed... i want to know is there any way i can encoded right away into Xvid or x264 as i`m recording? or how can i bring the file encoded in HCW2 into virtual dub.. i got a hauppauge WINTV PVR

i want to know is there any way i can encoded right away into Xvid or x264 as i`m recording?Doing so will guarantee you'll have dropped frames and overall unsatisfactory results.

Use a lossless video codec, as suggested by "SallyDog" and, after you've finished capturing load it into whatever compression program you prefer to use...

Your hauppauge card is using hardware compression, virtualdub can't compress it because it is already compressed.

alright but i can't get the codec to play the hardware compressed file and virtual dub can't open the file...

Hi!

The following is from a thread at the "VideoHelp" forum:junkmalle posted 2005 Feb 09 23:21
None of the hardware MPEG2 and MPEG4 capture cards support the usual VFW and DirectShow capture interaces. Those APIs are desinged for "raw" video capture, not hardware MPEG.

There are a few programs that can capture from the Hauppauge PVR-250 and PVR-350 series: SageTV, BeyondTV, WinTVCap. I don't know for sure if they support the PVR-150.

SaveTV and BeyondTV are full PVR applications with online programming guides. WinTVCap is a command line app that uses hardly any CPU cycles because it doesn't decode and display the picture and sound while capturing. It simply reads the MPEG data from the card and saves it to a file. It gets about 3 percent CPU usage while capturing.

If you're thinking the audio problems with the PVR-150 could be solved by using some other capture program -- I doubt it. I believe they all use Hauppauge's capture library so they'll get exactly the same data that WinTV2000 does.

ok i get dat but i still ask if there is any way to get the RAW video to open up in Virtual dub... i can't even play back the recorded file.. even with virtual dub all i hear is the sound

If you read the quoted information I provided, it appears that you simply have to use DIFFERENT capture software ("There are a few programs that can capture from the Hauppauge PVR-250 and PVR-350 series: SageTV, BeyondTV, WinTVCap. I don't know for sure if they support the PVR-150")...

What is the file extension of the captured video?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something. From what I've read, your card captures ONLY in MPEG format(s)...

You can use the card to capture to AVI, but why someone would do that with a hardware MPEG/2 card is a bit beyond me.

Capturing a 15Mbit/sec CBR MPEG/2 and then re-compressing it with XVID etc would yield pretty well identical results - except there'd be no dropped frames (source permitting) and good audio sync.

Now that I've run this through my secret-squirrel decoder ring and can understand it :o, virtualdubmod (http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net) can read MPEG/2 directly, or just use dgdecode (neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html) and avisynth (http://www.avisynth.org) etc.

@nrahim

Please be good enough to load your file into GSpot and post a screengrab of it here...

yh here u go... but the file recorded doesn't seem to be MPEG2 but rather AVI
