Ug... I hate it that these companies cannot sort out what standard they want to stick to.

Anyway. Does anyone know how compatable the DVD+RW format is? Specifically, can you copy a DVD video (one bought from a store) and have the copy play in a standard dvd player hooked up to a tv? Better yet, do you think my playstation2 would be capable of reading it?

btw. I have an idea for a new dvd standard... it's called DVD+DSNFD+@$#@!+#$%DASD$#+DSFJHKNMVKBLPR*#)@_$(@
Not only will it NOT play in any standard player, but it will also do your grocery shopping for you and wipe you behind.

Well the compatibility level is pretty good if you believe the dvd+rw propaganda page. According to them, the reflectivity of a dvd+rw is at the lower end of the standard for pressed dvds, hence they should play on most players.

I have tested DVD+RW "backup" copy of a movie (created with Derrow's great method and software) on several desktop DVD players and it was about 50/50. Sony, Onkyo and Pioneer (several models) did play well, JVC and Panasonic didn't (only tested one model of each). Didn't have a chance to test on PS2 yet, but as it is Sony, it might work...

I have an HP DVD+RW; out of 3 DVD players at home, two play the DVD's written by the HP burner (a Sony and a Samsung I bought at best buy a month ago) and one player that doesn't (a Samsung that I bought about
2 years ago).

As far as computer DVD drives, a stock Dell PIII with
a DVD ROM drive on it can read the DVD+RW fine but another
computer with the Pioneer A03 drive won't
read them.

i'm guess most of you guys are from america

have any of you guys tested a dvdrw on a pioneer dv-343??? how well did it play it??

i heard that dvd-rw will be more common than dvd-r is this true?? if this was the case wouldn't you want a player which is dvd-rw compatible rather than dvd-r?? thanks

Your HP drive can burn DVD-R (all purpose) as well?... or just DVD-RW discs?

Sorry for the question, but I'm looking for buying my first DVD burner and I'm not quite sure what is the best I can do

@MixMaker

The HP drive will NOT (at this point at least) write to DVD-R
disks. It will only write to DVD+RW (not DVD-RW, these are different).

I've read posts indicating that HP plans to provide firmware
upgrades to allow writing to "write-once" disks in the future but given
that this is the first version of this drive, I wouldn't hold my breath.

DVD+RW disks are about $15 each but the good thing is that you can't spoil them; if you make a mistake, erase them and try again. Given how many times I burned disks that didn't work (mostly due to my mistakes and/or buggy programs), it would have cost me a fortune to be using write once disks. At the same time, given that you can't write protect the disks there is some concern in not been able to make a 'final' copy.

Hope that helps.

I'm trying to amass info on a home theater system that I can hook up to a PC (my signficant other wants to buy one finally--halleluah!).

I read a post from a consumer of a Sony DVD (don't ask me what model...i just remember his problem...). He put in an 'illegal' copy of a DVD and the drive locked up on him, requiring him to take it to the shop to remove the disc. Apparently, this Sony model was an enforcer...

It seems Sony doesn't like it's DVD players playing MP3 either...(wonder why?!..<grin>)...
