i am having a video i guess codec problem. i downloaded an old codec pack that i uninstalled that i think is causing me problems. i have downloaded something and i watch it say windows media player and everything is VERY dark with a red hue. this video works fine with divx player. the problem i'm having is while im watching it in wmp and its looking horrible i can just start up divx player and it fixes the picture on the WMP thats playing. i'm assuming its a divx codec problem but i cant figure out how to fix this problem. i also DLed VLC and it also looks horrible on there until i start up divx player. I want to be able to use WMP or Videolan and have it work. if you guys have any tips plz let me know.
i have tried replacing some of the windows codecs by going to control panel, add new hardware, etc.. and adding the codecs via my windows/system32 folder or from the windows disk itself.
any ideas would be awesome and you guys i know are the ones to come to.
thx

Current codec packs are more friendly, but old ones would very often destroy a system's directshow, and troubleshooting on a forum is a waste of everyone's time. You might try CCCP Insurgent (http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=CCCP_Insurgent) to see if it can help, sometimes there are tricks to remove them, sometimes removing and reinstalling DirectX or even windows is the only way to fix the damage.
If it was nimo or defiler, well, you might be looking at a long reinstall.

You might start by re-reading the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm), particularly #'s 6 and 11.

What decoders are you using? foxyshadis already linked to it, can you download the Insurgent and posta test render of the video here?
Also, try checking the video card overlay colour controls (hue, brightness, saturation inside display properties)

@191924,
If your downloaded source is illegally obtained copyrighted content don't bother to reply, but read the forum rules instead.

You might start by re-reading the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm), particularly #'s 6 and 11.
"6) No warez, cracks, serials or illegally obtained copyrighted content! Links to content of a questionable nature, asking for, offering, or asking for help/helping to process such content in any way or form is not tolerated. "
as far as i can recall the codec pack was not warez or anything illegal. the video was just an interview FREELY available on the internet. i hope you're not assuming i'm viewing copyrighted content without me saying anything to the effect.
"11) Don't post just to increase your number of posts. If you have nothing to say on a certain matter then don't post. The number of posts on this board has no direct relation to the experience of a member."
where did i post to increase my post count? i cam here looking for help which some people have given me how would me posting 2 times help me PRETEND to be an experienced member. i was merely moving my thread up the board to make sure it would be seen since it had left the front page at the time i posted a 2nd time...
i will try CCP insurgent and give it a try. but ya, i had pretty much decided a format was the next step. thx for the help and i'll let you know how it goes and if i found any fix for any other people having similar problems.

when i run the test render i'm assuming its using my divx codec for at least some of it as the divx icon is showing up in my taskbar.
anyway, thx guys.

well, the test render is fine - check your overlay settings in your video card config. Nvidia defaults can be funny. Can I recommend the CCCP as a codec pack? Read the faq in the wiki for more info.

Hi,
I am afraid yes, mods and people will be assuming so unless you prove the legality of your downloaded material i.e. by giving the link to the web and/or download page.
See these announcements:

Concerning rule 11, you can always edit a previous post to clarify or complete your statements instead of posting a new one.
Welcome to the forum, hope you will understand the common rules and have a good time here.
Cheers.

thx. well when i play a video after using insurgent everything is fine because divx is still open so i'm assuming its using that instead. all my color controls are fine as far as i can tell and i reset the defaults to ensure that. i will try reinstalling directx maybe and also trying that codec pack you recommended. thx!

there is a link to one of the latest ones. i think the older one i initially tried is gone now but they update those daily. so no, it is not illegal.

Hmm, so it plays ok when you have 2 media players open? It's definately colour problems with overlay then, try the colour controls which will be somewhere in whatever media player you use.

Start, run: regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\quartz.dll
That will reregister everything that file does (and it does a lot). That is the first thing I would do if I thought directshow was messed up.
Note: when post bumping like you shouldn't, be clever about it... add some new information in your new post ;)

Try this experiment: Fire up VLC, go to Settings > Preferences, tick the "advanced options" checkbox in the lower right. Then Navigate down "Video -> Output modules", and use the "video output" module pulldown to select Windows GDI. Restart the movie. Does it look ok then?.

What version of the nVidia drivers do you use? Disabling 'colour temperature correction' might help.

i actually installed the ccp codec pack and then it was working fine. i uninstalled the pack and everything works fine. a lot of the codec's were gone but i just used vlc and all works fine. cant believe i didnt try that. so in conclusion the CCP codec pack had a cleaner install and didnt screw everything up when uninstalled. thx for all the help guys.

Definitely not 'Innocent until proven guilty' around here is it
Why so quick to presume that it is illegal content someone downloaded????
