Okay, so I'm trying to play a video that has some gameplay footage that I took in a high resolution with FRAPS. The video is about 3GB. When I try playing it in Media Player Classic, I get the following error:

I've tried VLC, WMP, Real Player, and Quicktime, all to no avail. All of my other videos that I took with FRAPS work just fine. I've tried everything that I know. I'm not very good with video programs, perhaps someone here can help a n00b? Any help would be appreciated.

Can you run it through gspot or mediainfo to check the fourcc (codec name)? If it's the same as the others, and it should be, it might just be that whatever you made it in doesn't support OpenDML avi, which is broken and can't easily be fixed. You just have to record shorter chunks.

Well I have gspot, but I dont know exactly how to use it. I suppose I just open up gspot, file-open-select the movie clip. So when I did that I got this in the container box

AVI v1.o
Corrupt AVI header
Chunk: /RIFF:AVI
Offset: 0x00000010
Value:0x00000124

Then I noticed at the bottom that there's something that says Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests. I tried pressing the 1 button under MS A/V and I got this:

Rendering failed. Following is the error reported by DirectShow:
0x80040218: No combination of filters could be found to render the stream

It's all gibberish to me. You certainly would understand it more than I would. When you said to record in smaller chunks, does that mean that this specific clip is a probably a lost cause?

Here's a printscreen for Gspot after I did the aforementioned.

Hi!

You might try loading the file into VirtualDub. If VirtualDub accepts it, split the file...

Success! :goodpost: Muchos gracias, Virtual Dub seems to play it quite nicely. I think I can figure out how to make the video smaller and playable from here, but in case I need help then I'll come back here sometime :)

Glad to hear that my suggestion worked! You're quite welcome ;>}

Splitting with VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub:

1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDub or NanDub
2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
3) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
4) Move slider to approximate halfway point
5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
6) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
7) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie1of2.avi").
8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Move to End"
10) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End"
11) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie2of2.avi").
