Hey everyone
Im fairly new to Gknot, have done a few successful encodes in the past, and i'm having whats probally a very simple problem
trying to encode a tv ep of 50 minutes to 350mb/xvid with GKnot 0.35.0. Output file ends up being a perfect 350mb of video with the 45mb of audio simply tacked on as extra, and the filesize ends up being 398mb. What little checkbox am I missing here :)
I selected the mp3, selected 'just mux', etc etc.
any help would be appreciated!

Before you save the encode job, make sure that within the Bitrate tab under Audio A that you've ticked "Size" and selected the appropriate MP3 file. You should also check Interleaving and AVI overhead and select the appropriate audio type.

^ I Have done all this, still having the problem. Everything looks fine. Video is 86%, or 306mb, of total file size, 350mb. Audio A 13% is set to size, type is mp3.

I havent got a clue as to why this isnt working, except for in the xvid 1st / 2nd pass the bitrate is calculated about 969 (unedited by me), whereas in gknot everywhere else it says it should be avg of 830.

Have you installed a newer version of XviD lately? If so, uninstall and reinstall it. It would of course have to be a coincidence that the file size is off by exactly the audio size.
If all else fails, encode the video to the necessary size without adding any audio within Gordian Knot, then mux it yourself.

i tried reinstalling the xvid codec, even tried several versions, with no difference in the outcome. ran across a post from 2002 where someone had the same issue and that he figured it was a bug in Gknot, which i highly doubt. i have done successful divx encodes with this same version but never an xvid.
anyway, by manually editing the target bitrate in xvid 2nd pass, i was able to arrive at a 346mb target filesize, so i guess this is good enough. would still love to know what the hell the problem is though!

Did you happen to set XviD's 1st and 2nd pass settings profile to unrestricted? You'll never achieve your desired filesize with Gordian Knot if you use a preset unless you manually configure it as you did.
Did you first uninstall XviD before installing a different version? Not doing so will cause similar problems.

It was set to AS @ L5 as is reccomended in the guides. You're saying it needs to be set to unrestricted?
Also, i did uninstall before reinstalling :)

The guides are very outdated. Gordian Knot works perfectly with newer versions of XviD, but in order for it to control the output size properly you shouldn't use a profile preset.
Sorry about badgering you about uninstalling first, but you didn't mention that you had, and it's a very common mistake.

I long for your conclusions, as I too never succeeded to reach the correct size with XviD. I love "good old" GK and succeeded every time using DivX 5.02

kikounet, have you tried the advice offered in this thread?
