I am trying to save a legally owned, non-downloaded video file as an image sequence so that I can make a gif out of certain scenes. Anyhow, it won't load in virtual dub, nor will it work in virtualdubmod (it loads, but the resulting images created won't load in image ready).
I read the FAQ stickied in these forums, but the answer doesn't really help. I need a link to the right codec since I can't find the fourcc value.
Here is the information I got from the release documentation on the file:
Video : XviD at 919 kbps
Audio : MP3 176kbps 2ch 48khz
Aspect Ratio : 4:3
Resolution : 512x384
Frame Rate : 23.976024 fps
RAR Size : 175MB: 13x15MB
Byte Size : 183,844,864
And here is the FAQ entry copied and pasted from the FAQ thread:
"I tried to opened a avi file but I get a "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XXXX' (unknown)" error, although it plays fine with my movie player. What's the matter?
This is another facet of the acm/vfw/dshow trouble. You seem to only have a DirectShow filter installed for the respective codec, but VirtualDub needs a vfw (video) or acm (audio) codec. This happens e.g. with xvid when you have only ffdshow installed.
We can't tell you for every content where to get a acm/vfw codec (might even be there isn't such a thing, see previous question). What you can try to do is find out the FourCC value (File->File Information) and google for it."
Thanks guys!

Here is the information I got from the torrent release documentation on the file: Per forum rule 6, we cannot help you with downloaded files.

Ok sorry then must have been a typo. The file is not illegal as I have purchased a licence for it. Also, rule 6 makes no mention of "downloaded" files.

rule 6 makes no mention of "downloaded" files. Oh, right. OK, then, see this:

amazed this thread hasnt been closed. can only assume you are being given the benefit of the doubt about where you got the file from.
Might be an idea to remove that doubt
so........ where did u download it from?

doom9 has made it a firm policy to completely avoid anything to do with copyright theft.
If you can show where you got the material legally then help will flood your way!

Ok ok fine you caught me, I was trying to make a silly family guy gif. Yes I know I am a terrible person and should be sent straight to a federal prison. I will never try to have ANY fun with popular media ever again. I will watch family guy from now on at the network scheduled time, making sure to give the commercials my full attention, and quite possibly purchasing several items advertised in said commercials. Thank you doom9 for putting me on the path of righteousness.
Now that that is out of the way, say someone had sent their home movies to a friend who encoded them in much the same way as described in my OP. Let's say that person tried to make a silly gif out of his newly encoded videos but encountered an error message not too much unlike the one mentioned in my OP, what codec/file/whatever should that person download and where?

This guy still doesn't get it...
Regarding where to get the codec for your friend's home videos, why don't you ask your friend what he used to create the video he sent you?

Ok, look I understand that you guys have rules, and I am not trying to be a dick or anything with my last post, I am just sort of playfully poking fun at your strict adherance to the rules considering the circumstances. That's all.
Anyhow, I got some useful PMs (thanks guys), and will try the advice those guys have given me, so any mods can close this thread and from now on I know not to make any mention of the origins of my files. I should have read the rules more carefully.

doom9 made that rule for a reason.
Certain powerful organisations who's aim is to protect the intellectual property of their members do not like it when websites promote unauthorised downloading of copyrighted material. Doom9 is simply covering it's ass from lawsuits and other hassle from these people by having a clear cut policy on this issue. It might seem petty but it stops doom9 venturing onto the slippery slope. You will see plenty of threads that are cut short for the same reasons.
Its not that you wanted to make a gif, its the fact you didnt pay for the source material.
