How do these one clickers work???
I see that DVD rebuilders use mpeg2 encoders to re-encode mpeg2 files to make them smaller. But i dont understand how these one-clickers claim:
DVD2one: they can "compress" to one 4.33 GB Disk, what is being compressed?
Also i have a DVD and it looks one-sided, but when i check it some tools report 7 Gb ???
:stupid:

Hi!
Neither DVD Rebuilder nor DVD2One is a "one click" program. They both require that you first use another program to remove copy protection ("rip") from the DVD as a first step.
Your DVD may be single- SIDED, but it is likely DOUBLE-LAYERED on that single side - and that's what programs like DVD2One are used for - compressing "DL" (double layer "DVD 9") discs to fit on a "SL" (single layer "DVD 5") disc...

Several commercial movies have one side but dual layers which ups the capacity of one side to 8.5GB. This is not to be confused with double-sided discs or flip discs. Hence, in order to backup your DVD, you'll need to either a) burn it to another dual layer disc (DVD9), b) recompress the movie to fit a single-sided single layer disc (DVD5) or c) divide the movie into 2 parts and burn to 2 single-sided single layer discs or 1 double-sided/flip disc.

which audio do i keep just the AC3 2/0 or AC3 3/2.1 ???
AC3 3/2.1 is better quality but is it compatible with most setups??

You can still play the AC3 3/2 audio but it will be downmixed to stereo depending on your setup. Although keeping it would use up bits that you might want to allocate to the video instead.
I use DVD Shrink to pre-process DVDs (shrink menus, get rid of audio, etc) prior to re-encoding with DVD Rebuilder. I can preview the audio tracks with Shrink which is good so I don't accidentally remove the dialogues and replace it with director's comments.

well why not just use AC3 3/2? and drop the surround AC3 2/0??
what system is good enough to have it downmixed when required?

Afaik, every DVD player can downmix AC3 3/2 (5.1) audio. AC3 2/0 is just Stereo.
AC3 3/2 (Dolby Digital 5.1)
pro: better audio quality
con: bigger size so less room for video
AC3 2/0 (Stereo)
pro: smaller size leaving more room for video
con: poorer quality

AC3 3/2/1 is the movie
AC3 2/0 is usually the director's comments (can also be a stereo mix of the movie, so listen to it!)

After ripping the DVD, listen to it in DVD Shrink or a software player. In DVD Shrink, right click on the title while it is playing in the preview window, to select the audio stream to play.
