View Full Version : Multidisk DVD Played From Folder

Hi,
Just wondering what the proper way of ripping a multidisk DVD to my hard drive. For example. I have the Superbit version of Lawrence of Arabia and would like to run it from my hard drive. Just to clarify, I want the movie only; don't care about the menus or chapters etc. I take it I have to rip in File Mode and not IFO?
Is this the way it should be done?
Rip all the VOBs from Disc1 and Disc2 into the same folder. Then rename the VOBs of Disc2 in the same sequence as Disc1.
e.g: Suppose -
Disc1 is VTS_01.vob, VTS_02.vob, VTS_03.vob & VTS_04.vob.
Disc2 is VTS_01_01.vob & VTS_01_02.vob.
Rename the Disc2 VOBs as follows:
VTS_01_01.vob --> VTS_05.vob
VTS_01_02.vob --> VTS_06.vob
I encode, therefore I am.
So when I start the movie will this now just run as one movie?

You'd want to rip it in IFO mode, selecting the PGC that matches the movie. If you're using DVD Decrypter, set file splitting to none and you will get a single VOB containing the movie. File mode will merge title credits and other multiple angle shots into the movie together and it will switch between them during playback. If there are no angles, file mode will work just as well.

Not sure I follow. Are you saying I rip in IFO mode each side of the dvd into one large file rather than 1GB files? Once I have each file (one for each side of the dvd) how does it play as one file?
How about this method

@DigitalDivide
Hi!
The following is, I believe, a much simpler solution:
1) Use DVDDecrypter (in "File" mode, from "Edit" dropdown menu, choose "Select ALL files", NOT "Select movie files") to rip each FULL side of the DVD to its own folder on your hard drive.
2) Then use either DVD2One's "Join" (Select "seamless") mode or DVD95Copy's "Join" mode

What will be the end result of this? All files in one folder that plays as one movie?? I just bought Ben Hur. Actually I have two things I'd like to do. One, rip the entire movie (both disks) to play from one folder on my hard drive and two, I'd like to encode the entire move to mkv to a smaller file size say one single sided DVD. Not sure how to go about the second option? I wonder if I use DVD2One's "Join", will I be able to use the outputted file with DGINDEX to create a project file?

I tried DVD2one doesn't work for me BenHur DVD. I get an error about "vob set exceeds 9216mb limit"...or close to that. I've tried it a few times and I always get that error.
I'm really getting frustrated. Seems there's no easy and clear way to join a double sided dvd. If there is please point me in the right direction. I tried the other variations above but none worked.

Most of the old release "flippers" (double-sided DVDs) are double-sided, single-layered, which would NOT exceed the limit for DVD2One's "Join" mode.
What is the total filesize of each side of your original "Ben Hur" DVD?
(I've used the DVD2One "Join" mode with "flippers" successfully several times)...

Side 1 is approx 6GB and side 2 is 3.5GB. I ripped each side in IFO mode, movie only, then recreated the dvd structure in DVSShrink. Then used that output in DVD2One. It's still too large.
I tried the option of copy the vobs via IFO mode to one folder and renaming them in sequence.
Disk 1 contained VTS_01_1 all the way to VTS_01_7.
Disk 2 contained VTS_02_1 to VTS_02_4.
I renamed them to VTS_01_001 to VTS_01_011.
Then ran VobEdit and selected VTS_01_001, then chose "join clips". I then get a prompt for "First Vob ID". I assume I enter 1? How so I know what number to enter here? I tried 1. I got my results. I then opened up IfoEdit and recreated the IFO files. When it finished I couldn't open up the files in DVDShrink.

It's still too large.1) Rip each side with DVD Decrypter in "File" mode (Select "All files", not just "movie files) - Save to two different folders/directories
2) Do NOT use DVD Shrink
3) Set DVD2One to "Join" mode, select first folder - then select the "TITLE" that represents the first part of the movie
4) Set DVD2One to "seamless" and "Advanced Navigation"
5) Select second folder - then select the "TITLE" that represents the second part of the movie

I tried what you suggested and at 96% I got the error
"The output vobfileset has reached its max size(9216). Please decrease the size."
So it doesn't look possible.

My apologies, I just noticed that you saidSide 1 is approx 6GBThat would make at least one side a double-layered side, which, when coupled with the second side, could bring the total size to greater than the maximum allowable for single-sided, double-layered media...
(I may have to rent it (If I don' already own it), just to check this out!)

I just fired off an email to their support. I'll see what they say. But so far it doesn't seem to allow for this even though I'm not putting the result onto my hard drive.

That's what you get when you don't pay attention to what you are writing lol.
It should have read, DVD2One doesn't seem to support writing anything larger than what would fit on a DL dvd even if it is not going to be burned to a dvd but simply played from the HDD. I'm still waiting to hear back from their tech support.

Out of curiosity, I just rented "Ben Hur". It's the first DVD-18 (Double-sided, Double-layered) DVD I've seen.
And, as you've discovered, the combined filesize of the movie is greater than that of a single-sided double-layered burnable disc!
I believe you can circumvent your problem by selecting "User Defined Size" and setting it to "9999". This should allow DVD2One to create an oversized DVD "package" of the movie only.
You should then be able to load this oversized DVD "Package" into DVD2One, set it to "Full Disc Copy" (or, perhaps, "Movie Only"), set the proper disc size for a double-layered disc (9,216) and have DVD2One perform the required minimal compression. You should then be able to burn to a Verbatim D/L DVD+R disc...
**EDIT** Just tried the above myself - and it didn't work. Trying a different approach now. I'll post back if it works ;>}
You can (have to) first use DVD2One, or other similar software, to compress one or both of the sides, so that the combined compressed filesize of the two sides is, perhaps, 100Mb less than the maximum allowable (to allow for .IFOs and .BUPs). Then use DVD2One to join...
**EDIT** I just successfully created and burned (Verbatim D/L DVD+R) a joined version with a total of 7.81Gb (8,389,031,936 bytes). It's playing now and appears to be of excellent quality. I left a little extra room, as I believe the top end of combined filesize is 7.95Gb...
As an aside, you could probably eliminate the need to compress - by eliminating the lengthy music-only "Overture" and "Entr'Acte" (Intermission) ;>}
**Edit** Just finished playing (and have now destroyed) the joined DVD. It played perfectly from start to finish, with excellent quality throughout - no delay at layer break either...

Just to be clear, you managed to join the movie but with compression? The key for me is without any compression. That's key for me. I don't want to compress the movie.
I tried the following already and it didn't work for me either.

I was thinking of getting rid of the Overture and Intermission. But not sure how. If I rip the movies, load them into DVD Shrink and cut the Overture and Intermission, then save the output as a dvd structure, would I be able to load the results into DVD2One??

The key for me is without any compression. That's key for me. I don't want to compress the movie.If you intend to keep EVERYTHING, the movie is simply too big to fit on a D/L disc.
You could use DVD Shrink ("Set to No Compression") to:
1) Eliminate the French audiostream (A total of 312Mb for the entire movie) from each side
2) In "Re-author" mode, use "Start/End" frame to eliminate the "Overture" from Disc 1 and the "Entr'Acte" from Disc 2. Each one is conveniently the first Chapter of its respective disc...
With a bit of luck, this may be sufficient to reduce the overall combined size sufficiently, so that the movie will fit on a D/L disc...

Boy this DVD is giving my DVD drive a workout. I've copied the movie maybe 6 or 7 times already trying numberous things.
Hopefully I'll be able to try this out tonight.

Well I managed to join the two sides without compression. I used DVDShrink to only include the movie, AC3 track, then cut out the overture and Intermission. This did the trick. Although I have a small pause between the two halves where the music is noticably cut, it is only for 2 seconds. I can live with it.

It took some effort to get there - congratulations ;>}
In re-reading your most recent post, it sounds like you used DVD Shrink, rather than DVD2One "seamless" "Join", to join the two pieces. If that's so, you'll have created a disc with two separate Titles for the two pieces - and you'll find that once you've gone past the intermission point, you won't be able to use your remote to select "Previous chapter".

Actually I used DVD2One Seamless branching to join them. I only used DVDShrink to cut the Overture and Intermission.
