View Full Version : Avi's I make play jittery and shaky in dvd player

I use my sony dvd recorder to record off my tv. Then I run the .vob files through DGindex keeping original settings. I save as myvob.avs and import this into VirtualDub-MPEG2. I have the size import at 640,480. I do any editing then save my file using XviD quality setting 2.

I have a toshiba dvd player that supports .avi playback, but the .avi's I make play jittery and shaky. Other .avi's I've downloaded from other people play just fine.

Are there any settings in DGindex or VirtualDub-MPEG2 that I should change to fix this?

Thanks

Check out the specifications of your player at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers and make sure you aren't exceeding the bitrate for your player.

There's no useful reason to refer to "other .avi's" here.

Thanks for the link, but I couldn't find the max bitrate for my player. I also looked in the player manual, but no luck.

The reason I said "other .avi's" was to show that I have other .avi's (not movies from dvds but clips from tv) that play just fine on my dvd player without being jittery or shaky. Knowing this tells me I also should be able to make .avi's that won't play jittery or shaky, except that I don't know how.

I have found out that when I'm playing an .avi that is jittery if I stop playback and then start playback again and do this several times it will sometimes catch and play correctly, however it is really annoying to have to do this, and only with the .avi's I've made.

It sounds like you think I'm compressing at too high a quality for my dvd player, is this right?

It's likely - a lot of standalone players can't handle a bitrate of over 1200, and that's pretty low by my standards (I use a media PC and encode movies at least twice that).

That's a bummer, I like the higher quality too. I'll keep that in mind next time I purchase a dvd player that supports .avi playback. Maybe by the time I'm ready to get another one the standard will be higher. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Be aware that actually all chipsets used in Standalones (SAP) are more or less limited to near instant 4000 kbp/s bitrate which correspond to 1200-1300 kbp/s final bitrate.
The recent chipsets like MTK 1389 (not all), Zoran or Sigma (EM8620) may support up to 6000 kbp/s near instant which translate to 1600 to 2000kbp/s final bitrate.
To encode safely for any SAP, use the Home theatre profile (Pal or Ntsc) and play the resulting avi from a DVD media, not a CD !

Maybe by the time I'm ready to get another one the standard will be higher.
Maybe or buy an HT/Media PC like CWR03 suggested.

Having a Media PC is sounding really really good to me right now. I'll have to look into that possibility sometime in the future. Thanks for the info. all
