I am trying to back up a DVD release aug 15th, I've installed and tried the newest versions of : ripit4me,dvdfab,dvd shrink, vob blanker, dvd clone, any dvd (basically everything) An I've tried every combination. the PC is a p3 384mb ram 120gb hd a 4 day old install of XP w/ sp 2 and all the updates, even directx. I've sucessfully backed up many of my movies I own. However this new release will not go. As soon as I get it to DVD Shrink or Clone DVD it crashes the whole PC, first the timer in the aplication stops counting down it just stays at the same time. A minute or so later my ram buffer in the app decreases slowly, then within a minute the preview stops and this means the whole pc is froze and I have to hit the power button on the tower to get the pc to reboot.

Hi!
It would help if you posted the Title and region number of the problematic DVD.
I've sucessfully backed up many of my movies I own.Have you successfully backed up any DVDs on this system, since your 4 day old installation of XP?

So I guess my Question is: Why will my PC not backup? Thanks setarip_old.

Sounds like you may have some bad RAM - or, perhaps, your system is overheating...

I did add a stick from my dead box, maybe that was not such a good idea. I'll try troubleshooting the ram. What do I do if it overheats?

What do I do if it overheats?Clean out the innards. Make sure fans are working properly. Make sure vents aren't blocked...

Yup you called it. Overheating it was, whoever was in this pc before me unhooked the fan thats right on the chip!!! and there is a best buy service sticker on the back, damm that geek squad. I've already sucessfully backed up an older disk so, so far so good. now I will try one of the disks that were giving me the problem. Is there anything that can be done to curb cpu usage, mine was at 100% the whole time of the rip, I used anydvd w/ shrink. maybe if I rip first w/ dvdfab then use shrink by itself??:thanks:

Yup you called it. Overheating it wasGlad to hear the issue was so easily resolved ;>}Is there anything that can be done to curb cpu usage, mine was at 100% the whole time of the ripMost of the video-related programs (ripping, editing, converting, etc.) greedily grab as much CPU usage as they can - Nothing to be concerned about...

ok everything seems fine then got as far as the burn process and made a few coasters, before I used Nero 6 and used DVD video setting so it makes a video_ts folder for u and u just add files. It won't play in a standalone player only pc (and quite good i might add) though. When I made my last backup I just dropped the files from DVD shrink into Toast (my only dvd burner was on my mac) select data udf, new disk and just add 2 folders (video and audio ts). Same media and the ones burt w/ toast play in every player in the house fine.

personally i would take nero out of the equation ;)
grab yourself a copy of ImgTools Classic and ImgBurn from the doom9 download page:
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/software2.htm
you can even configure ImgTools Classic to automatically open ImgBurn once it has created the disc image to burn that image onto a blank disc for you.
i have been using this combination for years and it has never failed me yet.
