Adding subtitles to DVD format

there are guides that let you rip subtitles from a DVD, but
is it possible to re-encode subtitles to dvd?

i have several AVIs accompanied with SRTs that i'd like
to burn as DVD-video, so is it possible without hardcoding
the subs into the video? what tools do i need to be able to
do this?

It would be much easier to make a "movie only" backup from your original DVD.
