View Full Version : Trying to back up a dual layer DVD with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter

I'm trying to back up my original DVD of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (backing up just in case anything happens to the original). First of all, DVD Shrink gives me this message:

DVD Shrink has encountered an error and cannot continue.
Failed to read file "E:\:"
Copy Protection Error - The read failed because the sector is encrypted.

That's fine, I thought, I'll try it thru DVD Decrypter. But as it says it has 2 layers, I know it won't fit on one 4.7GB blank DVD-R. So I went into IFO mode, did Stream Processing and unchecked the subtitles and audio I didn't need. I selected a destination and clicked the burn from disc to drive icon. It did what it's supposed to do...completed OK. So (I"m presuming this is what to do) I went to ISO mode, clicked "Write" and I can't find the files. In the dropdown if I select "All Files" they show up...but it doesn't accept them as valid files. I've even tried finding the files through DVD Shrink with no success. I know I'm doing something wrong and I've been searching for a tutorial but I cannot find one I can understand.

I'm not sure if I'm following the right steps or even if it's possible to use DVD Decrypter to copy these dual layer discs somehow. If someone could give me some pointers or steer me in the direction of a tutorial a layman can follow? I'd be forever in your debt :)

Thanks in advance.

They are not valid files to write as they are not ISOs. Moreover they have no Video Manager (VIDEO_TS.IFO) and so are not a full DVD package.

What you can do is drag the IFO from your IFO mode rip onto the DVD Shrink GUI. This will open it in DVD Shrink and allow you to make an ISO and burn with DVD Decrypter.

Thanks Les. I'm sorry to be a pain in the rear but what exactly is the DVD Shrink GUI?

So basically I drag the files from where they've been saved into this GUI bit? That seems easy...once I understand what the GUI bit is! lol, sorry again but I'm totally clueless when it comes to technical terms. But I'm slowly learning!

@LunaMoon

Hi!

Make your life simple and use the "RipIt4Me" package to re-rip (and then compress) your original DVD.

You can download it at:

www.ripit4me.org

While you're at the download site, read the excellent (and easy to follow) "how to" tutorial...

Thank you for that, setarip_old!
It worked brilliantly. And the "how to" was so easy to follow, even for an old computer illiterate chook like me! :D

Thank you very much.

Qouted: "Dumb question. Can i copy from 1 dual layer disc to 2 single disc by using the same softwares."

Not a dumb question: Someone's had to ask that question before in order to come up with a way to do it -- and you've got many options!

Since you've already got DVD Shrink, one method you can use is to create one disk that's "movie only" (contains only the movie and sound streams that you want to keep... plays like an old VHS tape with DVD quality; chapters and audio streams are accessable with your DVD player's remote control) and a second disk with your bonus features (blank out the main movie using a "video has been removed" still, and all bonus features are accessable via the menu). If you want the menu on your movie-only disk, you can manually blank the extras on full-disk mode. For movie only, go to the reauthor mode. Either approach will allow you more space for what you keep, thereby increasing your backup's quality.

There are many opinions on how best to do what you're asking; using the "search" function on this forum will likely steer you in the right direction. There are also some useful guides on Doom9's homepage under the link named "guides." Among these exists a DVD Shrink guide that, with a little playing on your part, will make you more familiar with what you can do with 'Shrink. As always, it's best to write directly to your hard drive when starting out so that you can test what you've created before burning.

Have fun, and welcome to the forum!

Consider VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm) - guide on site.
