Hi guys,
Been reading for a long time and still havent found the answer so thats why posting this Q....
I record with my asus laptop using dvb-T and its HDTV and outputs as mpeg. So e.g. one of my clips is 1024 x 576. it has black bars on either side. When i try to burn it .. it becomes 720/576 so its quite skinny.
How do i crop out the black bars on the sides? and how do i maintain the aspect ratio? without it going all skinny?
Thanx for any help :)

It appears that the video is regular 720x576 just packaged into a 1024x576 framebox which is quite a weird format. Anyway you can use TMPEGEnc for cropping out the black bars and reencoding of the video, as you cannot crop out the black bars without reencoding of the stream. If you want to reencode it into any AVI-Format like XviD, DivX or x264 you can use VirtualDubMod instead.

hey thanx m8...
but even after cropping, say, it wont be a dvd compatible resolution therefore i still cant burn it right?
the dvd patch thing.. is that the only way to go? no other easier ways is there?
And sorry just read yoru reply again, i think its 1024x576 of actual video. with the black bars its even more. So i simply cant squeeze that into a dvd to play on dvd player right? unless i cut some non black bits out?
thanx :)

To be able to produce a hardware DVD-player compatible video-DVD you will need to reencode this video. At the same time you can crop the black bars left and right of the video. If the video does not have a 4:3 widthto height aspect ratio thereafter you will have black bars at the top and the bottom. If your source video is produced with a sufficiently high bitrate and you a high variable bitrate within the DVD-specs. you should be able to produce a video-DVD with a decent video quality. Just look for guides here on www.doom9.org how to produce a DVD.

That's exactly what you want. All you need to do is make sure that it's burnt as 16:9 and not 4:3 video, then players will do the necessary resizing to preserve the aspect ratio. How are you burning the disc - are you taking the raw stream from the dvb or are you re-encoding?
Also, for the reference, 1024x576 is not HD, it's merely widescreen SD. If you're really getting HD then you should be seeing 1280x720 or 1920x1080/1088.
