I want to mask the outer edges my 16:9 footage, there seems to be two options: In "picture quality" you can tick letterbox and crop to the desired size, or in "advanced" there is the blanking feature. Which do I use?

do you mean "pillar-boxing", like you get in DVB-T? where there's black bars at the sides instead of the bottom of the screen?

in that case, use "blanking" and go 90 pixels in from each side - 4:3 footage in a 16:9 frame is effectively 540 pixels wide. (720-540)/2 = 90.

No, I want to duplicate the 16:9 letter box so the mask will hide the tearing & jittery part of the picture that is sometimes evident when viewed on a 4:3 TV, because the "unsafe" area of the picture is visible.
