As a subpart of my study of MPEG-4, I have been assigned getting some information on other parts of MPEG. Therefor I am looking for a book on the MPEG-2 standard. I am not looking for the ISO documentation, but rather a book which can give me a taste of how MPEG-2 works before I start on the ISOs.

The main reason for the MPEG-2 study is learning how it works, so that I can tweak the parameters for maximal quality (as far as I have understood, there is more to it than bitrates). However an introduction to the algorithms is always interesting so they are also welcome :).

DVD demystified could be such a book. But I haven't read it.

IMO if you really want to understand the whole mpeg thing, I recommend this way:

jpg(baseline) -> (maybe h.261 ->) mpeg1 -> mpeg2 -> mpeg4

And there are many homepages on the net which cover a simple explanation of the mpeg format.

Good luck!

Thanks Bester

Shortlu after I posted the question I found one an MPEG-1 introduction, and I agree that it was a good place to start. It gave a much better idea of how it and MPEG-2 works. It was the following PDF I read about MPEG-1:

Probably there is something better out there, but never the less it helped.
