subtitle in xvid movie

hey, well i'm new to mpg4 ie divx and xvid.
i'm using gordianknot package to convert dvd movie to avi.

objective:
to get the avi movie with subtitle which can be closed or opened in dvd player by remote control( not in pc.)

history:
this can be achieved by using latest dr. divx version which also encodes subtitle that can be turn on/off in divx certified dvd player just like dvd. but i really don't like dr. divx.

i want:
other tools which can make this possible.
this may be integrated with gordianknot pack or virtualdubmod
or may be used after converting dvd to avi
or ...................

So you want to have an AVI that can be played on your standalone DVD player with selectable subtitles?

One way is to convert the subtitles to .SRT format, most players can show them and you can switch them on/off by remote.

The other way is to get a DVD player that can handle this new DivX 6 shit, I think that supports selectable subs.
