i have hundreds of directshow codecs, and i can play around with merits and use tools like DS filter manager, radlight filter manager etc
The problem is, i could disable one filter/splitter (by setting merit "do not use") - then the next available is used.

But i just dont know which one of the many direct-show filters i have is preferred - maybe some are better than the others.

I want to clean-up a bit.

To give you an idea (i wont post a list of ALL), but:

* ATI (filters/demuxers/splitters/decoders etc.) - (30)
* Cyberlink (latest PowerDVD) - (20)
* CoreAVC
* DivX (latest)
* ffdshow (of course)
* Haali
* Intervideo WinDVD 7 (11)
* MainConcept
* NERO filters, latest Nero 7 (a whole S.L.)
* Sony (which came with Sony Vegas), (lots)

* and MANY more, Microsoft, Generic, etc...

I know some i want to keep, eg. ffdshow, AC3 filter 1.09, but sometimes i wonder which one are actually outdated or i could just delete...eg. if i have all the Nero splitters/filters...couldnt i just delete the Mainconcept ones....and which one should i prefer over others ? Any general hints/guides ?

thanks

My recommendation - remove *everything*. Install ffdshow to decode video and audio. It should cover almost everything you will ever need. If you come across something which can't be handled by ffdshow in the future, install the needed decoder. Done.

If you are an encoder, you will need to install the needed codecs too - XviD, x264 etc.

EDIT: OK, keep CoreAVC since you have paid for it.

uninstall it all and install the CCCP. It includes:
o ffdshow (every video format you'll need)
o haali media splitter (mkv, mp4, ts parsing)
o vsfiltter (vobsub, ass/ssa, srt subtitle rendering)
o preconfigured installs of media player classic and zoomplayer
o a few other bits and pieces (read up in the CCCP wiki)

Best solution for all playback problems :) There's an entry in the wiki on getting it to work with the coreavc too.

I like the CCCP so far. I was getting a little frustrated with VLCs internal codecs getting in the way
of ffdshow and vsfilter, etc. The only problem I've had with it is stuttering playing Huffyuv avis on XP x64
with Medial Player Classic and GForce 6800 GT (91.47). Maybe needs VMR9 rather than overlay for that,
but I haven't really looked into it yet. Still a little jammed up by that new Nvidia Control Panel, heh.
Good luck.

VLC only uses internal components - it neither interferes or is interfered by external directshow filters.
As for huffyuv playback - well, that's mostly because huffyuv is a very CPU intensive codec. Overlay is faster than VMR9 too.

Although I'm not particularly fond of the CCCP I think it's better than most codec packs out there.

Avoid the kazza light codec pack at all times.
