View Full Version : Best FFDShow build with Conroe?

Hi all, I'm building a new HTPC and will be getting an E6600 next week. My former rig was an AMD Athlon64 X2, which worked quite well, but now that I'll have an entirely new CPU, which build of FFDShow should be best to use with the Conroe?

:thanks:

12) How NOT to post on this forum:
...
Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!

And.

1) Read up before asking! There are tons of guides, FAQs and each forum has a dedicated Q&A thread with additional info.

1a) Use the search function before posting. Chances are your question has already been answered.

:thanks:

Guys, you still have the right to say "best" once in a while. That question can be answered objectively, so there's no problem asking for the "best" in that case.

Moreover, I've tried using search ( "conroe ffdshow" or "e6600 ffdshow" ) and only came up with this very thread.

MidnightWatcher : your previous build, or any SSE2 builds, should do. A E6600 behave a lot more like an athlon than like a P4.

well.. I'd expect any member here to be able to figure out which instruction sets their cpu supports and from that make a match to a certain software. Furthermore, it is a well known fact that most open source software contains very little cpu specific optimization.. intel ain't paying them and consequently you won't see the considerable intel specific optimizations certain commercial software goes through.

How about this then. What version do you use with multithreading and SSE2 support that works great for you? I've also done a search as well and came up with little.

Did you try this one:
ffdshow-tryouts-rev135-core2duo.exe (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow-tryout/ffdshow-tryouts-rev135-core2duo.exe?download)

ffdshow's decoders aren't multithreaded...... and I very much doubt that besides AVC a singlethreaded version won't be enough to decode any video you can throw at it (coreavc is smp enabled though.. whether that's really the only decoder can be answered by browsing these forums a little more)
and using it as encoder... well, there's an smp xvid build, and with x264 you're better off on the commandline.

Thank you, I"ll give it a shot tomorrow once I put my system together!
