The good thing is the guy might not even watch it for a while. He's probably a pirate, too and has long since returned his DVD. :D:D:D

As I did this (bizarrely named) thread! :D

Yeah... I wonder how many people read this thread just to make sure that "Bad Crack" isn't something they picked up on a street corner earlier today.
But, of course, they would obviously not be Doom9 members... only lurkers!

jdobbs, may I asked how you did this? It looks like you're very talented with anti-cracking. Good job though, it's funny to see these things.

I don't know why but it really eats me up inside that people are stealing DVD-RB Pro. All he is asking for is $30.00 to further production of an already great program with free of charge constant updates and support even without the donation. I can't even imagine how much time it must take to make this program better. Though my problem is not because a movie is being shared on the internet (which I do not condone) but why they would steal DVD RB-PRO to encode it with. I mean jdobbs has the kindness to release a free version as well as one that requires a donation. To think he has to go to these lengths just to give the pirates a good f*** you just amazes me. Finally I am wondering if there are anymore so called f*** you have hidden in DVD-RB PRO to prevent this program from being stolen. Truly sorry people are taking advantage of your time and effort.

That's something for jdobbs to know and for the hackers to find out. Hopefully he can stay at least one step in front of them :)

Not that I'm condoning piracy in any of its forms, but I sorta-kinda see it if someone cracked CCE SP -- it's expensive software! I sorta-kinda see why someone would get a keygen for Windows XP -- again, not many people think that paying $200-$300 for a CD full of buggy software is worth it.
But as Satanraiser has stated Jdobbs is ONLY ASKING $30. For a progam that he tirelessly supports and updates. As I recall, many of us who are using Rebuilder Pro got our first copy back when Jdobbs didn't have a pricetag on it yet -- the software was ours for whatever we could afford to donate.
I don't know if the whole Rebuilder-cracking thing is because hackers enjoy a challenge (as I know some of us regular guys do, while making our backups -- look at what happened to rippers when Sony ArCcoS came out) and will simply try to crack anything. I don't know if some of these people who try to download the P2P files feel as if they're entitled to free copies. But come on, people! Jdobbs decided on a price that he thought was fair -- and in today's world of high-priced software, $30 is pretty ghetto -- and heaps support on his product to boot.
I applaud his anti-piracy proceedures, and am glad that we're seeing many instances that it works. Pay up, hackers. Why rip off a man who isn't trying to rip you off? :sly:
...I guess I'll step off my soapbox now...

I've tried to stay out of this for the most part. But I just thought I'd say this:
It isn't Microsoft or any of the other big software developers that will ever put an end to independent software development. They really can't compete. It will be pirates who do so. While the pirates can't really seriously hurt a business that sells millions of copies off of store shelves worldwide, they can kill their smaller competition who depend on vehicles like the internet.
In the end it will be their fault that the only choices in software will be the mega-houses -- and keep your eyes on the prices when that happens. Does anyone remember the price of gasoline/petrol back when there was competition from small companies in the oil industry?

Piracy based on perceived (poor) quality is okay? I think not...

Nor do I, and I'll take a small slice of your time to clarify my point. To start (I swear I'll keep this brief. Promise!:) ), every -- and I do mean EVERY -- item of software that I own and use is legit. As such, there are many times when I feel the sting of frustration when I'll pay into the hundreds of dollars for a program that seems only able to crash or conflict with other programs. During these times, I CAN UNDERSTAND why someone else would have, in my shoes, simply have downloaded a hacked version of a given progam; if it doesn't work, there's no monetary loss for them. They simply uninstall the faulty program and forget about it. That's why I worded it the way I did; "sorta-kinda," ect.
By way of comparison, Jdobb's DVD Rebuilder does not clash with other software that I use (in fact, it's nice to have a user-friendly progam that I can use CCE with), nor have I had problems with it crashing. When there are problems, it's usually fixed within the next version -- which all of us know doesn't take long to arrive in our Email boxes. All that for only $30? Like I said: It's virtually unheard of in today's software environment.
I absolutely do not condone piracy, and I appologize if the opposite message is the one that you walked away with after reading my post.

Point well made and deeply understood. Not to date myself and feel old... but when I had completed driver's education and earned my license, gasoline in my hometown was .99 a gallon for regular. Ah, the good 'ol days! This was back when no one was ashamed to be driving around, blasting Whitesnake or Bryan Addams. ;)

Can you imagine being caught as the hacker, though? Probably jdobbs has a way of telling which user it was that made the hacked version. I don't know how, but maybe if he gets 20,000 requests for a key file from a single account or from a single email address, the game's up.

While it is amusing to see this, I'm going to close the thread before the discussion goes even further off topic. I don't think an open discussion of DVD-RB's copy protection will be of any use to legitimate users and this forum isn't the place to discuss anyone's general philosophy on software piracy.
