Hello,
I want to encode a simple movie in an DivX 6 AVI. And I want to encode the audio source in ACM (AC3). But I cannot find an ACM Codec that works with VirtualDub and WinXP x64.
Can anyone help me ?

U can find and AC3 ACM codec here http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/AC3ACM/. I still would recommend u to get aften (and aften_gui) to encode to AC3, then just mux with VirtualDubMod or Avimux_GUI.

AC3ACM won't install as-is on windows x64.
See here (http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?showtopic=8231), go down to the 12th post and it describes how to install lame, just use the same procedure but substitute AC3ACM.inf for lameACM.inf.

I tried it but it didn't work. It installs the driver (inf) but the codec doesn't appear in the list of audio codecs in VDub. What am I doing wrong ?

Make sure AC3ACM.ACM is in the windows\syswow64 directory. If it still doesn't show up try a reboot.

Slight thread detour, but since it's on the subject of 64bit windows -- will 32bit applications still run normally? You just have to worry about finding 64bit versions of all your hardware drivers, etc?

Most 32-bit apps run ok, except apps like dscaler which communicate with the hardware directly.
