I'm about to build my first Dual Core computer (AMD 64 X2). Video encoding (curently xVid) will be the most cpu intensive activity. I now use 1GB of ram. Will 2GB be needed or would it be better to buy 1GB of better ram?

1GB is more than enough ( as soon as you don't do heavy video editing ). The RAM speed is more important for encoding than a additionnal GB. But most important still is the cpu. In that regard, if you didn't already buy the X2, perhaps considering a Duo Core 2 might be worth it.

That's for next time. I don't believe in paying much more than $200 for a cpu.

I purchased a GV-NX76256D-RH, the best fanless card I could find, for $176. This will actually go into my older machine which will be the new HTPC. My new main machine will inherit a 6600 GT. I don't do any gaming.

I've always felt like I could make up CPU slack by fast memory and plenty of it. This machine has 2 gigs but I rarely ever get past one gig. One is always burned out, this PC burns through memory chips like AAA battiries.Plus a clean HD is a happy HD a good defrag routine is a must. Be strict about what services you turn on, (The site Eldergeek is fair source on that) I have never used virus protection because A: it's like the cops - gets there after you got shot.
B It uses too many resources. I have never gotten a virus BTW (but I've gotten things like gator)
I'm still not for sure but I think Windows pro is slower then windows home - but that could be the PC (which is a POS), don't buy a PC from ABS, total garbage, Oh wait the case looks good and the wiring is very neat, and the ASUS mobo (I'm on my second going for 3) has a lot of useful settings (a fully tweakable BIOS) it has good components but it just doesn't perform. My 2.5 year old dell runs circles around it.
