View Full Version : Check for Bad DVD Structure

In the past, I would use Nero to burn the output of DVD Rebuilder to disc. All of these discs work in my PC, most work in my PS2, and maybe half work in other, low-budget standalone DVD players. I have since changed to let DVD Rebuilder output an ISO image and to use ImgBurn to write that image to disc. This solution works consistently even in the low-budget players.

Now, would like to search through my older discs to know which will fail in some player. I would like a tool that checks the structure of the disc to ensure that it conforms to the DVD standard. I'm rather ignorant to the details, so I probably can't explain it much better. If you know of such a tool, however, please let me know.

The most common verifier is the Phillips verifier ~ $500 . However it has major limitations on NTSC projects and even on PAL it will always through a couple of errors when there aren't any!

I believe the industry standard is the MEI verifier - however - as i understand it this is only available to DVD forum members ~ $10,000

You asked :D

Hi!

With regard to your older DVDs, even if they do "conform to DVD standards", there's no assurance that they'll play on all players. Unfortunately compatibility issues exist between many players and burnable DVDs produced by different manufacturers.

There are also some players that will play ONLY DVD+Rs or ONLY DVD-Rs.

And yet another compatibility problem can arise regarding DVDs burned at higher speeds...

from what i know there is not an easy way to test dvds for incompatibility but however there is a way for extracting dvds into a copmpletly compliant iso ready to burn.

For this i would use dvd shrink not only will it create a fully compliant disc image but also will fix any authoring errors that may cause playback problems. For example brocken ifo's etc.

all you have to do is open dvd-shrink and set the disc as your source set the quality to 100% if it isnt already and it will create a perfectly dvd comliant dvd image ready to burn using whatever application you choose.

eclipse is one of the most common that the replicators use before they make the stamper.

Sadly, the often praised DVDShrink does NOT ensure 32K gaps between BUPs and IFOs, resulting in discs that may fail to play in the future if an IFO is unreadable because the BUP (backup IFO) may be in the exact same bad sector!!! This totally defeats the purpose of having BUP files. Nero does the same thing when burning in DVD create mode.

Please take a look at:
http://www.digital-digest.com/~blutach/pgcedit_guide/burning_with_pgcedit/burning_with_pgcedit_v2.htm
and scroll down to the bottom and look for "Technical Information Regarding 32K Gaps" and tell me if you still feel as comfortable with burning DVDShrink produced files as you do right now. If you do feel just as comfortable, then you have not understood what this website is trying to tell you. You CAN use DVDShrink, but then you have to use PgcEdit to create an ISO to burn or you are just gambling with your BUP files.

The other way is to us Shrink as normal but use Imgburn 2 to automatically burn with. It will put the 32k padding in for you.

Eclipse Image Analysis is a commercial program that is very easy to find, unless you are looking for warez. Please read the rules, especially rule #6

@radar

Be aware that according to the Eclipse site information, the program ONLY works with the following:Supported Media
Image media can be any of: CD-R, CD Replica, Exabyte 8mm, or DLT Tape, Local or Network file (DDP format)(It doesn't mention DVD burnable media) I also noted that the website was last updated in August 2005...
